South Dakota trying to suppress Native American votes?
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 08:55 PM by bleowheels
Native Americans in SD generally vote Democratic as a block and the state government here is Republican controlled so you can see why this is happening.

from the above article

The group was just trying to encouraging Native Americans to vote. But the secretary of state says plans for an early voting satellite station in Lyman County are illegal. The Four Directions committee was formed to improve voter turnout on the reservations.

In Lyman County, the group worked with the local auditor to set up a way for Native Americans to vote early this Friday in Lower Brule. But, the secretary of state says combining the voting with a local homecoming event creates an illegal incentive to vote.

2. Subject line
Please change your subject line to: Early Voting Controversy In Lyman County

The subject line needs to match the headline of the article exactly. The rules for posting in LBN are pinned at the top if you need more guidance.

3. They did the same thing in '02
and Thune still lost. Doesn't mean they won't do it again. And, they will also whine and scream voter fraud.

5. Registration...

... is up statewide with about 85% of those eligible registered to vote. Some of the reservations have doubled the number of persons registered to vote in their jurisdictions, so things are actually looking up. And technically, someone would argue that a free piece of homecoming cake, candy or whatever someone recieves while in town to vote was a "gift". I'll side with the Sec of State on this one. Better safe, than sorry when those ballots get thrown out in court.
