"American Concervative" Magazine endorses John Kerry
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 07:22 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
"American Conservative" Magazine Endorses Kerry!

American Conservative magazine just 'endorsed' John Kerry:"Bush has behaved like a caricature of what a right-wing president is supposed to be, and his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism for generations. The launching of an invasion against a country that posed no threat to the U.S., the doling out of war profits and concessions to politically favored corporations, the financing of the war by ballooning the deficit to be passed on to the nation’s children, the ceaseless drive to cut taxes for those outside the middle class and working poor: it is as if Bush sought to resurrect every false 1960s-era left-wing cliché about predatory imperialism and turn it into administration policy. Add to this his nation-breaking immigration proposal—Bush has laid out a mad scheme to import immigrants to fill any job where the wage is so low that an American can’t be found to do it—and you have a presidency that combines imperialist Right and open-borders Left in a uniquely noxious cocktail." <...>

"George W. Bush has come to embody a politics that is antithetical to almost any kind of thoughtful conservatism. His international policies have been based on the hopelessly naïve belief that foreign peoples are eager to be liberated by American armies—a notion more grounded in Leon Trotsky’s concept of global revolution than any sort of conservative statecraft. His immigration policies—temporarily put on hold while he runs for re-election—are just as extreme. A re-elected President Bush would be committed to bringing in millions of low-wage immigrants to do jobs Americans 'won’t do.' This election is all about George W. Bush, and those issues are enough to render him unworthy of any conservative support."

2. Probably doesn't belong in LBN
If you read the article, there is a "hard to ignore" caveat stating how difficult it is to endorse in this election - then goes on to say there are several endorsements (which there are) beginning with Pat Buchanan's endorsement of *.

What a laugh - I thought they were political foes?

3. This is not good, not good at all.
It will cost us the liberal vote.

:D

(Told my husband about it and he laughed out loud, which he does not do often. He's a confirmed chuckler.)

8. I don't think so. The election is about how bad GWB has been not
how they agree with Kerry.

22. Look at the points made
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 11:27 PM by Aidoneus
From both their particular point of view and taken apart from ideology, the points made are excellent, even if some of them are a few of the reasons why I like the effect of the 'Bush' era. They're worried the ship will sink under his command, whereas I would not mourn such (what comes after is of interest, though). Specific 'issues' aside, the former is the liberal argument as well.

I don't think an obscure magazine will cost 'us' the liberal vote. The party itself may do that, but not Buchanan & AmConMag.

5. This is a great article, sad too
Great that it defines * as he is and how he will be viewed in history. The comparisons to Brezhnev are as interesting as they are scary.

It is a shame that even after they endorse Kerry, they feel they will oppose him from Inauguration Day on. It clearly shows they have no willingness for compromise or reaching across the aisle. a shame.

A definite read.

24. Sure. So they can go back to enslaving workers, blacklisting dissidents,
and bombing the hell out of any nation they don't approve of.

The neo-cons did not invent American imperialism or heavy-handed government spying: that is the work of your "old school conservatives," who are some of the worst swine ever to bestride the earth.

It's his magazine.

So I guess he gets to have it both ways. He probably wrote the piece.

29. Please read the article!
Kerry’s the One

By Scott McConnell

There is little in John Kerry’s persona or platform that appeals to conservatives. The flip-flopper charge—the centerpiece of the Republican campaign against Kerry—seems overdone, as Kerry’s contrasting votes are the sort of baggage any senator of long service is likely to pick up. (Bob Dole could tell you all about it.) But Kerry is plainly a conventional liberal and no candidate for a future edition of Profiles in Courage. In my view, he will always deserve censure for his vote in favor of the Iraq War in 2002.

<SNIP!>

This is NOT written by Puke-cannon -- there is one written by him there and he endorses *. There are seven endorsements total - I couldn't stomach reading even one, in total.

picking apart Bush than even the best Democratic attack dogs do.

14. No, they don't
"Their pieces, plus Taki’s column closing out this issue, constitute TAC’s endorsement. —The Editors"

From Taki's closing peice:

"Without big ideas, elections become about personalities—popularity contests, nothing more. Both major candidates are filching each others’ rhetoric and pandering. All that matters is the sell, not the content. Kerry is an opportunist sans pareil, Bush a man under the wrong influence. Vote for the real deal, Michael Anthony Peroutka"

15. "...his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism"
...his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism for generations

They say that like it's a bad thing.

Seriously, while I'd LOVE to see conservativism discredited for generations, when set against the damage bu**sh** could do in four more years, it's just not worth it. So the more conservatives realize this, the better.

fiscal conservative types. Let's face it, the deficit and other things he's doing with the economy drives them nuts. The fundies still love him and always will.

25. So the cross-species freak (shrub-chimp) is a uniter after all
What a way to create a fusion ticket. Even conservatives are setting aside their differences to leave the worst administration in US history in the dust. I truly hope that Nov. 2 brings a complete refutation of the neocons in the form of a Kerry landslide as well as a Democratic takeover of both houses of Congress. Christmas is coming early this year.

28. October 18th--Buchanan endorsed Bush
Pat Buchanan Endorses Bush Re-Election

"Pat Buchanan, who has transformed over the years from one of the more eloquent advocates of traditional conservatism to a reactionary isolationist and mercantilist with whom I seldom agree (although I still find him quite engaging), has reluctantly endorsed the re-election of President Bush in the lastest American Conservative."

After I read this post, I got on the "internets" and found this...
