Boston Herald apologizes for graphic photos of woman who died (Red Sox)
http://www.boston.com/ae/media/articles/2004/10/22/boston_herald_apologizes_for_graphic_photos_of_woman_who_died_following_red_sox_win/

The Boston Herald on Friday apologized for publishing two graphic photos of a woman who died after being struck in the face with a pepper spray-filled projectile fired by police into a crowd of Red Sox fans.

The Herald was inundated with complaints, by phone and on its Web site, about the photographs of Victoria Snelgrove, 21, of East Bridgewater, who died after police fired plastic pepper spray balls into the crowd as they celebrated the Red Sox win in the American League championship against the New York Yankees.

The Herald ran a color photo on its front page, and a smaller black-and-white photo inside its Friday editions, showing Snelgrove lying on the ground, bleeding from her nose and left eye.

"The Herald today published two graphic photos that angered and upset many in our community. For that, I apologize," Herald Media Inc. Editorial Director Kenneth A. Chandler said in the statement. "Our aim was to demonstrate this terrible tragedy as comprehensively as possible. In retrospect, the images of this unusually ugly incident were too graphic."

15. On the contrary
The police issued an apology almost immediately and spoke of the department being emotionally devastated by this event. Which is certainly a welcome contrast to other police departments in similar circumstances.

18. They DID apologize and take responsibilty. I'm tired of the cop haters.

It was an mistake, and error. They took FULL responsibility. If you think that the police would wantonly kill a 21 year old girl, then your hatred of the police is blinding you.

This was a tragedy. They used, what is considered, non-lethal tactics to disperse an out of control, drunk, crowd. It's not fucking Kent State.. so stop trying to make it that! It was a drunken beer brawl after a baseball game.. and the victim was unintentionally killed, as a bystander, as her friends have said.

19. Drunken beer brawls are an American tradition.

Only recently have the police, dresses in their new storm trooper uniforms begun firing into civilian crowds.

For over 150 years, the New Orleans Police have been able to manage the largest drunken beer brawl in the nation. They have NEVER fired indiscriminately into the crowds.

6. Patrick Purcell, the sleaze bag who passes as owner of the
Boston Herald tabloid rag, should be hung by his toenails for this, his latest lousy deed. And, the family of Victoria Snelgrove should hire plaintiffs lawyer(s) to sue the beegeesus out of Purcell and Herald Media, Inc.

8. Murdoch was forced to divest from ownership of the Herald due to

FCC rules at that time. Purcell worked for Murdoch but left News Corporation to buy the Herald. I and a lot of ppl believe they are still one in the same but not formally on legal documentation.

look it up in wikipedia.org Patrick Purcell, Herald Media, Inc., Ruport Murdoch, News Corporation.

edited to add: btw, Ted Kennedy was behind the FCC rules that forced Murdoch to sell the Boston Herald, and since that time the Herald specifically and pointedly and repeatedly bashes Ted and his family. Both Purcell and Murdoch are sleaze.

here's a website that mentions some of the info:

and here's "Boston Herald" at wikipedia.org:

12. Kerry's hometown vs. Bush's former hometown
Look like Boston is going to the World Series. Whereas, Houston didn't quite make it. I was personally hoping to see Boston destroy Houston in the World Series. It would be a preview of things to come before the election.

I'm sure they planned the apology long before they published the pictures.

17. So much for 'non-lethal'. & I just learned that the safety of pepper spray
was documented only through studies done by the pepper spray manufacturer, and championed by a policeman who was getting paid by that manufacturer.
