The NAACP state conference kicked off its weekend in Washington County by inviting both contenders for the White House, or their surrogates, to speak to 200 delegates from throughout Pennsylvania.
President Bush, as he did this summer with the national convention of the nation's oldest civil rights group, ignored the invite. Sen. John F. Kerry, on the other hand, asked his wife to stand in.
Before she uttered a word, Heinz Kerry received a standing ovation.

But state NAACP officials were upset that President Bush didn't show.
"He's sending a clear signal that we can be ignored," said Burrell Brown, state conference president. "On Nov. 2, African-Americans will show him that's not true."
