Sox Pitcher To Appear With Bush In New Hampshire
CONCORD, N.H. -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, who urged people to vote for President George W. Bush on a national television show Thursday, will appear with the president on Friday in New Hampshire, a campaign spokeswoman said.

At the end of his interview about his team's World Series victory on ABC's "Good Morning America," Schilling signed off: "Tell everybody to vote. And vote Bush next week."

The president congratulated the Red Sox' owner and president by phone -- and thanked Schilling for his support.

Schilling won Game 2 of the World Series and Game 6 of the American League Championship series despite a torn tendon sheath in his right ankle that will require surgery.

He is scheduled to appear with Bush at rallies in Manchester and Portsmouth on Friday, campaign spokeswoman Maria Comella said.

61. Tell that to Fred Smoot
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/10/28/bc.fbn.redskins.politic.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

<snip>
Smoot, a black from modest means in Mississippi, has decided to choose his roots over his pocketbook. He is supporting Democratic Sen. John Kerry for president.

"When you go into a higher tax bracket, all of a sudden you don't want to vote for this candidate because he's going to raise taxes," Smoot said. "I thought about it. I'm not going to solely vote for this candidate just because he's going to save me a couple of dollars and it not turn out to be the best thing for me or my country."

21. Even as a Yankee fan....
I respect and admire what he can and does do on the field.

Sellouts don't pitch on a bum ankle most of the year.

Sellouts don't continue to pitch when severely aggravating such an injury.

Sellouts don't pitch BLEEDING from such injuires(masterfully I might add)

And before that he was active on Sox fan message boards and did everything he could to engratiate himself to the Sox nation.

Schilling may be many things; a fundie, an idiot for supporting Bush etc. But he is not a sellout. I say that grudgingly as the sob beat my team.

Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 06:54 PM by joeunderdog
He stands on his principle and doesn't do the bidding of others unless he believes in it. Curt negotiates his own contracts, he calls out players who are screwing up, and he's a man of his words.

Yeah, he's a bit off-base on some stuff, but he's not packaged for retail. I'm somehow guessing his reasons for being for Bush are not financial, but I don't know. I don't understand it, and I sure won't agree with it, but I bet he's doing what he thinks is right. It's better than alot of these people who are doing what they believe is wrong.

And what a gamer! SOX ROCK and so do their senators.

59. I agree, sort of...
As a Yankee fan, I have to admire what he does with a baseball, particularly against the Yankees. But two things:

1) He didn't feel the ankle or tendon when he pitched against the Yanks the second time. His foot could have fallen off and he wouldn't have known cause it was numb. That allowed him to do his thing, which is to beat the Yanks.

2) He aint all that great of a pitcher, really. Most of his career has been decidedly ordinary. But he sure can pick his spots. Beating the Yanks in the Series first with Arizona, then with Boston will be what he's remembered for, not all of his .500 seasons. His two rings, particularly the one with Boston are his only ticket to the Hall of Fame, and even that probably won't do it. Stats are everything and his aren’t all that great, except for maybe 3 or 4 season (out of 17). Unfortunately for the Yanks, those 3 great seasons have come in the last 4 years and at their expense.

This bush thing is just one more good reason to hate him. All that said, I'm glad Boston won the Series, they deserve it. And I hope Pedro comes on home to daddy next year.

10. It would be great to find out how he feels about
concepts like progressive taxation, welfare, school funding, etc. He probably supports all those--and that would make him look like an idiot for voting bush. And if he's against them all, it makes him look like an idiot for not understanding the concept of the common good--and then roll footage of huge SUV, fancy suit, etc.

But we should all remember that few of us get mad when our celebrities urge votes for Kerry. This guy has a right to look stupid and urge others to be stupid. He is exercising that right.

Dear Curt,

Thanks for helping the BoSox win the WS...

A Giants Fan

-----------------------

Schilling used to mouth off about how he didn't fear Barry. He'd pitch to him in a big situation while Bob Brenly paced nervously in the dugout.

Barry would launch one over the left field fence...

The Giants Win!

He has a big ego. That's one of the things that makes him a dominant pitcher. It's also probably why he supports President Arrogant.

Birds of a feather...

He swings, he misses, he's outathere...

sports players are politically to the Right because they make so much money. I feel very strongly that pro-athletes are just a bunch of steroid-filled monkeys!!!

Sports suck!!!

And yes, "There's too much at stake in this election to overlook Schilling's politics. This kind of shit has consequences with people's lives."

65. I'm just cynical enough to believe that the sports craze
has been part of the effort to dumb us all down, and in some people, replace knowledge with ego. It's gotten too much like Roman circuses.

63. Two things
A) predicted this morning that it would take Rove a nano second to sign this asswipe up on the campaign trail (and this from a Red Sox fan).

B) I know my NH neighbors. Yes, this is enough to make some of the weak in the brain who support Bush, got cold feet and switched to Kerry, to come home to da' Bush. In places like MA and Maine they would say "whatever Curt"; but NH is a bit different and could be swayed.

70. Hunter
Curt Schilling was born in Alaska and happens to be a huge hunter. Not sure if he's a sellout or was just born and raised a red state kind of guy. Maybe a little of both.

75. update: should read won't appear with * in NH
Bush also was getting the endorsement of freshly minted World Series (news - web sites) champion pitcher Curt Schilling. The Boston Red Sox player had planned to appear Friday with Bush, but his doctors advised him not to travel because of his injured ankle, Bush aides said.
