Computer glitch still baffles county clerk (affects Dem county in Indiana)
The day after a two-and-a-half-hour delay in counting ballots due to a glitch in a computer program, LaPorte County election officials are still trying to figure out what happened.

"Maybe there was a power surge," LaPorte County Clerk Lynne Spevak said. "Something zapped it."

At about 7 p.m. Tuesday, it was noticed that the first two or three printouts from individual precinct reports all listed an identical number of voters. Each precinct was listed as having 300 registered voters.

That means the total number of voters for the county would be 22,200, although there are actually more than 79,000 registered voters.

1. I wonder how many other precincts around the country reported...

5. At least 18000 extra votes in North Carolina given to Bush
By a computer "glitch". Probably just a garden variety miracle, though.

3. Handy Dandy EM pulse
I wonder if I could make an EM pulse device small enough to be portable. You could then wipe out an entire polling place unless they wrapped the machines in a copper wire faraday cage.

Of course, I could always read up on voter activities from about 1,500 feet using tempest technology. I love unshielded signals from video monitors.

It's a scary world we live in, folks....

6. Doesn't need to be complicated. ES&S has left that handy 2 digit
back door hole in their code for three versions now without
fixing it. Typing the 2 digit code changes the internal
tally. This trap door was well documented at Harvard and MIT.

4. Remember that electrical grid breakdown?
Anywhere care to trace the states it affected back then?

bush said they would investigate and solve the problem with the grid, but nothing was done and it fell off the radar of American consciousness.

I knew damn well back then it was a trial run. The fact that it happened in London and in Italy was a bit spooky. As for the American power outage, now we're seeing the results of their little "experiment."

11. correction, indeed
"Spevak said workers at the clerk's office thought a computer correction could be done once they received a software patch from Election Systems and Software, the Chicago company that provided the tabulation software. However, the patch did not work."
