Bush Says CIA. Approved Uranium Comment
Bush Says CIA. Approved Uranium Comment

President George Bush insisted Friday his remark about Iraq seeking uranium, in his State of the Union address, was cleared by the CIA, reports said.

Speaking from Uganda as part of his five-day African tour, Bush appeared annoyed with media attention the remark has attracted, since his speech in January.

I gave a speech that was cleared by the intelligence services, the president said. It was a speech that detailed to the American people, the dangers posed by the Saddam Hussein regime.

Bush: CIA Cleared State of the Union Speech

ENTEBBE, Uganda — President Bush on Friday put responsibility squarely on the CIA (search) for his erroneous claim that Iraq tried to acquire nuclear material from Africa, prompting the director of intelligence to publicly accept full blame for the miscue

"I gave a speech to the nation that was cleared by the intelligence services," Bush told reporters in Uganda.

Hours later, CIA Director George Tenet (search) issued a statement, saying the 16 words in Bush's State of the Union address concerning a purported uranium deal should never have been uttered by the president.

"This was a mistake," Tenet said. "This did not rise to the level of certainty which should be required for presidential speeches, and CIA should have ensured that it was removed."

On Friday, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said the controversy only strengthens the case for a full, honest accounting of any intelligence failures.

"The continued finger-pointing, charge-countercharge, and bureaucratic warfare within the administration do nothing to make this country safer and will simply further erode the confidence of the American public and our allies around the world," he said.

I honestly feel Kerry doesn't have a grip at all on what the hell is going on! This is more than Beauracratic Warfare this is Cheney
getting his hands in the intelligence. Cheney's name is strangely not appearing in this mess. :bounce:

2. It wasn't 'a speech', assh*le!
It was the f*cking State of the Union address! This wasn't something one of your speechwriters whipped up in two days; every single word is vetted for accuracy and to ensure the meaning is clear.

Of course, this is the same guy who doesn't like written treaties, since a verbal understanding should be enough.

Sheesh!

3. By the time Bush gave his SOTU speach
I knew the uranium deal was BS. Bush is either incompetent or he lied.
