DON'T DUB ME, DUBYA - PM calls off medal ceremony in US
TONY BLAIR has ditched plans to receive a "thank you" medal from President Bush next week for backing the war on Iraq.

The Prime Minister and the President scrapped the ceremony as it would have triggered a furious backlash in Britain where controversy over the war is raging.

Mr Blair is engulfed in a growing crisis over the legality of the war and the Daily Mirror can reveal American officials have had intensive talks with the PM's aides over the past week.

Pictures of a smiling Mr Blair having the Congressional Gold Medal pinned on him by President Bush would have been beamed around the world at a time when British and American soldiers are still losing their lives in Iraq.

2. Thanks,
now I have to clean up my keyboard.

One thing I want to know, if this was such a just war, and if these guys are so righteous that even the pope was wrong, why aren't they holding their heads up high and proud of their achievements?

Why is W running around 'out of harm's way' while this whole thing blows up and why isn't Tony glad to come to America to get his medal from W?

5. Signs of the massive meme shift
They're talking a good game--"Tenet takes the blame! We're in the clear!"--but the fundamentals, as they say, are not at all sound.

This particular story may not get a lot of play in the media but it's more of a body blow than it appears.

Consider this: Congress voted him this medal. Congress, GOP dominated or not, still runs largely on the vapors and aethers of gauging the Leadership Aura of the executive. This is something the pro-war party wanted. An important brick in the wall of Everything Is Going According to Plan in Iraq and We Are Proud of What We Are Accomplishing There.

Will they continue to say that? Of course. But everybody who voted for this medal will know that it has been declined, and why. It represents a major loss of *presidential and War Party voltage. Doesn't matter how much play it gets out here. They'll know, and it hurts. It was all about pointing to the impeccable glossy sheen on the Glorious War Victory Limousine. But just as they were rolling it out of the garage, a flock of seagulls fresh from the Waste Management Substation has come flying over and the thing is spattered with thick, acidic, finish-destroying guano. Back it goes.

Terms like "ignominious" and "embarrassing" and "mortifying" apply. Not good terms for the Aura of Infallible Leadership.

politicians, and many are already using it:

I was misled by the President and the CIA....so I voted for the war...I never would have voted for the war if I had known about this WH/CIA lies....(there'll be a tidal wave of these remarks next week, after everyone spends the weekend thinking about their options and realizes that it's time to cut out...politicians are no fools, having got where they are by knowing when to hold 'em, and when to fold 'em)....

shrub's THUGS all think like KKKarl rove, the guy who couldn't even power his brain up enough to finish college, and basically worked his way into high levels of power with schoolyard bully tactics...just beat up anyone who disagrees with you...

you are absolutely correct, DrBB, this is slaughtergate...

certainly, these exact tactics have been done before and are now being executed exactly as worked so well in the past....... but NOW, it's a perfect storm...shrub's minions were in Africa, and unable to stop this whole mess in an early stage, mostly by spreading lies and attacking people who object...

there are STILL GOOD PEOPLE in America who will step forward now...young reporters who will seize the moment, Civil Servants who will risk their careers, people who now see the Iraq massacre as bad foreign policy and total incompetence, people mad about the money that shrub's war is draining out of us, even the military is horrified at the stream of body bags....we've already seen a few American Hero's step up, Ambassador Wilson is one...but there will be many more, as people become empowered...I've read that over 25 people reviewed the SOTU speech, plus, there are the other speeches by high level officials....and NOW, there is the internet...

it's really a breathe of fresh air...impeachment, forced resignation, or just a failed election for shrub...his power was only based on the illusion created by KKKarl and it has suddenly dissipated like a morning fog....and WE THE PEOPLE can see clearly now....

on edit: plus, it's the lazy days of summer when people have more time to think and talk about these things, hang around and read the paper, chit-chat with your neighbors, and there is no other BIG news than this....and in the background is the daily drumbeat of ANOTHER YOUNG SOLDIER KILLED IN IRAQ/AFGANISTAN, and it feels like Vietnam quagmire....

6. Now THAT is a damn good question
...and I have no idea how to research it. But what a nice stiletto of a story it would make if true. And I very much suspect it is. Unless there's something from another dark age of our National honor, like the Viet Nam era.

7. Blair is the Uberputz's weaklink
they've been playing Iraqi lies-dodgy dossiers, hydrogen
bacteria labs, etc. against us and now they're
tangled up.

Reuters is reporting CBS even as CBS changes its story.
http://www.takebackthemedia.com/cbscia.html

I'll never forget when the Media turned.
Greenspan's wife-Andrea Mitchell- saying that we, the NBC
branch of the PROGOVMEDIA, have been saying this
all along
Peter-from the ABC affiliate- didn't get the message
until sometime later because he was still pooh poohing the
Niger story at the end of his show-you know, w/ his dismissive
wink, nod and chuckle.
The next time we see Peter he's leading w/ this story on his show w/ all seriousness.

I laughed and laughed.
Bush is history.

22. here's the spin from MSNBC
The Brit commentator said it would look unseemly while Blair is pressuring Bush to release the two Brits imprisoned at Gitmo.

Incidentally, MSNBC's Alix said something fundamentally stupid. She asked "Isn't it odd that Blair can be so popular in America while having trouble at home?" The Brit said that is usually the case, that a leader is more popular abroad than on his own shore.

Whoops. What does that say about Dubya? Hated around the world, tolerated at home.
