Joplin Globe: Ozarks under cover [New Magazine, The Ozarks Reader]
Magazine gives peek at hidden history, attractions in region
By Melissa DeLoach
Globe Staff Writer
3/14/05

NEOSHO, Mo. - Returning home after a day of picnicking, the 76 occupants aboard the Missouri & North Arkansas passenger train were halfway to their destination when the conductor failed to take the siding at Tipton Ford, and the train collided head-on with an oncoming train.

...

But his magazine isn't limited to just remembering tragedies. While it has a historical focus, the 32-page periodical also contains information on travel destinations, unique businesses, and the music, taste and culture of the Ozarks. Features have included the War Eagle Mill near Rogers, Ark., and Jolly Mill near Pierce City, as well as the Cherokee Queen riverboat in Grove, Okla. There are stories on locomotives and country stores, and tidbits on area museums.

The first edition of The Ozarks Reader was published last fall, and of the 1,000 copies printed, 700 have been purchased, Jackson said. The second edition was published last month. There is little advertising, and color is limited to the cover, but Jackson said his aim is to keep commercialism out of the publication he designs on his home computer. While the majority of the sales are in Missouri, the publication also is being sold in Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma.

1. Sounds interesting.
I have happy memories of childhood vacations in the Ozarks -- although the ticks were awful.

4. Politically the Republicans now control EVERYTHING!
So we are beating public opinion drums to try and prevent cuts to Medicaid, etc. Our new callous conservative even suggested that we get rid of a program that assists developmentally disabled babies!

5. I'm so sorry to hear this.
Are Democrats organizing? Do you have a strong state committee? Have you joined a local Democratic Club?

I think local Democratic clubs have worked well in California. Many of the leaders of the Democratic Party in California got started in our local Democratic Club, Northeast Dems. I think that Democrats organize the party in a state makes a big difference about how successful it is in winning elections. Of course, in spite of our great organization, we lost the governorship many times, including to Schwarzenegger. Still, we are doing better than most other states.
