DeLay Tries, Without Much Success, to Duck the Media Pack
DeLay Tries, Without Much Success, to Duck the Media Pack

By Dana Milbank

Thursday, May 5, 2005; Page A11

Tom DeLay sneaks around the Capitol like a fugitive these days, using back doors and basement passages to avoid television cameras. He skips meetings where reporters might get a chance to film his answers to their questions. He makes unscheduled appearances so he won't attract a media mob and disrupt colleagues' events.

And it still doesn't work.

At 11 yesterday morning, the House majority leader made an unannounced stop at a meeting of a high-tech group. But word got out, and a score of reporters, producers, photographers, cameramen and sound men with boom microphones were there to greet him. When he left midway through the meeting, the pack chased him down a hall and up the stairs, shouting questions about the House ethics committee, which may investigate him, and prosecutor Ronnie Earle in Austin, who already is.

"Earle says you're America's problem," a questioner shouted. "What do you say to that?"
(snip/...)

2. Heat gettin' too much for ya Tom?
I LOVE IT! Make this weasel crawl through the bowels of the building to get around! What's the status of things with the ethics committee since they redid the rules to what they were in the past? Have they met yet?

Maybe they have, and good old Tom is recognizing what the news is gonna be real soon.

6. He'll be fine.
With the two repubs on the ethics panel recusing themselves as they were Delay contributors, no special prosecutor, I doubt very much that anything will come of this whole thing. It'll pass into oblivion, buried in details no one wants to take the time to review. Ronnie Earle is the closest thing we have for a chance to throw this bastard out and he has been on it for a year or better.

If Cheney can get away with the energy task force farce, Bush and cabinet with the lies on WMD, what makes this event important enough to cause much beyond the headlines it already has. Its already fading.

I'm so disgusted....
