Ceremony opposed Iraq war, but honored fallen Americans
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/editorial/11983022.htm

On this year's beautiful, sunny Memorial Day, my husband and I attended a ceremony at Thoroughbred Park honoring the deaths of more than 1,650 Americans who have died in the war in Iraq.

Each was represented by a small American flag planted in the grass between the bronze horses and Midland Avenue. For seven hours, the names of the dead were read. The flags responded to the breeze, sometimes waving in unison, sometimes marking the wind's ebb and flow as it passed through their midst. They were lovely to watch.

While the flags did their dance, the ceremony's participants took turns reading the names, ages, hometowns and dates of death of the Americans who died in Iraq.

Each reader tried to speak the names and personal information with care, to pay respect in a small way to those who had died on the battlefield.
