NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING

BY JIM WILSON

Published on: September 11, 2001

The surge of a Category 5 storm could put New Orleans under 18 ft. of water.

They don't bury the dead in New Orleans. The highest point in the city is only 6 ft. above sea level, which makes for watery graves. Fearful that rotting corpses caused epidemics, the city limited ground burials in 1830. Mausoleums built on soggy cemetery grounds became the final resting place for generations. Beyond providing a macabre tourist attraction, these "cities of the dead" serve as a reminder of the Big Easy's vulnerability to flooding. The reason water rushes into graves is because New Orleans sits atop a delta made of unconsolidated material that has washed down the Mississippi River. -snip-

The fact that New Orleans has not already sunk is a matter of luck. If slightly different paths had been followed by Hurricanes Camille, which struck in August 1969, Andrew in August 1992 or George in September 1998, today we might need scuba gear to tour the French Quarter. -snip-

During a strong hurricane, the city could be inundated with water blocking all streets in and out for days, leaving people stranded without electricity and access to clean drinking water. Many also could die because the city has few buildings that could withstand the sustained 96- to 100-mph winds and 6- to 8-ft. storm surges of a Category 2 hurricane. Moving to higher elevations would be just as dangerous as staying on low ground. Had Camille, a Category 5 storm, made landfall at New Orleans, instead of losing her punch before arriving, her winds would have blown twice as hard and her storm surge would have been three times as high. -snip-

Maybe Bush shoulda been reading Popular Mechanics that morning instead of 'The Pet Goat' .... just a thought  Peace.

1. While it would most likely not have changed history, I

am so saddened by the irony of this article. The timing, the message, the warning, sigh.
Thank you for sharing this doublethink, I completely understand.
Peace to you my brother.

I like your site! Couldn't listen, plug-in issue with Mozilla, but the lyrics are great. I like the way your family thinks, good people! Good links too.

2. Your quite welcome my sister........
We are all one big family when it comes down to it. This New Orleans tragedy proves that. Kids separated from their parents, brothers, sisters, and others taking up the slack immediately to care for one another as their own. I'm blessed to have been born into a family that has had that perspective since day one. I wish you could have heard the song, we have had some helpful response lately so we can post the song ('s) ..... soon in other formats. We need to get on that. Anyway yea the article was just another stopping point along the way to shake our heads at the Bush administration in showing the information was out there. All their excuses 'who woulda thought the levees woulda broke?' or whatever they come up with (reminded me of Condi's remark "who woulda thought they would have used planes as missles?)..... on 911. Okay I could go on and on ..... anyway peace for now, hugs, and keep the faith Vickiss, we're all in this together, thanks for your kind words. :)

3. I'm going to see if someone can
figure out the glitch/bug in my wmp10 so I can listen to your song.

* is killing me with that "begged the Governor to act" bull. What?!?! I know what you mean about 9/11 and going on and on! Did you see where 10 businesses in CO received loans for 9/11 hardship? Again, WHAT?!

You are fortunate even more in that you recognize the value of your family and their perspective. So many people can't see how fortunate they are and miss so very much in their lives.

4. "The potential loss of life in Louisiana could be catastrophic..."

..Because large areas would have to be evacuated, false alarms could be harmful to the economy. Stone sees it as a reasonable tradeoff.

"It's better to have that frustration than the loss of life. The potential loss of life in Louisiana could be catastrophic because there is just nowhere to go."

5. It just sickens me, I'm
assuming that * received numerous reports besides the article. It's just too heartbreaking to think about the lives that would have been saved had someone with the power taken the reports seriously. And screw their concern of false alarms, greedy corp. pigs. :(

6. You must be referring to this ...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050909/ap_on_bi_ge/sept_11_lax_loans
yea saw that, it reminded me of how our homeland security broke down the funds per state for protection awhile back, came out to like $3.00 per person in N.Y. and $70.00 per person in Wyoming or some absurd contrast. .... what are these people thinking? I do not know or care to know. I only care to replace them with competent human beings who make some sense. As far as family, thats it, what else do we have if all else is gone? What else really matters. Material things can be earned, replaced again, time with loved ones is what life is all about. Peace and hugs again.
