Wolcott: Schmoozing and Snoozing (*'s performance in Kansas)
I'm completely mystified by Bush's performance a few minutes ago on the stage in Kansas, by what the White House was thinking. This was given the big kettle-drum buildup on cable news as the first stand and deliver sales pitch for domestic spying, but instead of keeping the speech and the event short, sharp, and focused, Bush hung around for 90 minutes answering non-security questions easy-lobbed from the faithful until the tedium hung so heavy Bush himself, his face already lined with fatigue, seemed to lean on the lectern to keep from dropping into a dead dull heap. Although his body language showed relaxed command, wow, was he ever working that jaw while listening to the questions--it resembled the back and forth of a tense saw.

1. The only thing I heard today was the Brokeback Mountain
question. The Bush response was pathetic. Wolcott's version of the event sounds pretty much as I expected it to be. Yawn.

2. Wolcott is a wit from a bygone era
He could have sat at the round table at the Algonquin.

Not tired, just lazy (and he thinks it "looks cool"). That "rebellious teenager" look.
