India on alert for suicides after stocks slide
Mon May 22, 2006 10:11am ET

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian police are watching out for possible suicides by brokers and investors after a steep market slide wiped out billions of dollars in share values, officials said Monday.

Policemen were keeping a watch near lakes and canals, possible places where people in distress could head to kill themselves. They said rescue teams were on alert.

"A financial crisis can trigger suicides. We are just trying to prevent them. Till now, no such cases have been reported," said R.K. Patel, a police official in the western city of Ahmedabad.

India's Bombay Stock Exchange Ltd., which had a market value of $657 billion last week after falling 10 percent in the previous two sessions, slid as much as another 10 percent in early trade Monday following sales of stocks held by brokers as security on behalf of their clients.

"Gold has turned into brass. We are finished," said S.S. Gupta, a middle-aged Mumbai broker who said he had lost millions of rupees in two hours of trading Monday morning.

6. Actually, Europe has been sliding over the past couple of weeks...
My retirement funds are in European & Asian stocks and I've watched this quarter's gains drop from 8% to less than 1%. I am not shifting them, though - because I think the US is in for a harder fall sometime soon.

Global Meltdown?

Russia's MICEX stock exchange suspended trading in shares after that market dropped more than 8.5%. Russia is not alone!

Swedish Krasch!

Subscriber report out of Sweden just in 11:00 CDT:

Hi - The Swedish bourse (biggest Nordic) has crashed as of today. It topped 3 April and has since then declined over 15 percent as of today's closing. Wednesday last week it fell 4,2 percent, and it was called black Wednesday in Swedish press. But today Monday it fell 5,34 percent, which must be a blacker Monday. It sure can be the beginning of wave three down globally.

Regards KH, Subscriber, Sweden

India Crash

Suicide watch for brokers and investors today.

9:49 CDT Update

Mexi-Melt, Argen-toast, Bashed-zil

Mexico's stock market is down more than 3% at last check. Brazil down about 4 1/2%, Argentina down 4 3/4th % Dow has a small gap down at the open to fill. Then?

West Coast Warning

This is odd: A curiously ominous warning to the west coast on one of the boards we monitor: See the "Today is May 22" post. And subsequents from poster "googles bin hijacked." Odd and maybe useless, but popped up on our radar...

Ready for Crash Day?

Say, I don't mean to start off the day on a bummer kind of a note here, but there is some speculation that the markets are in a similar position to 1987 here and could go through something like a "mini-crash" as trading progresses. The British paper, The Times, says market conditions are eerily similar to 1987, as they see it. But more important to us is something a little more obscure called the Metonic Cycle. It's basically a 19-year/234.99 lunar month cycle.

Bombay (Mumbai) was doing it's best to crash last week, too. Germany and France this morning are down more than 1% - the UK down 3/4's of one percent.

7. What will be interesting (and very telling) is who/what will be left
standing after all the markets level out.

Wonder if we'll be able to tell who made the killing(s)?

8. In 1997 many commit suicide in Asean
There was even a chinese lady who hang herself in our country.
She dress herself in all RED make up her face then hang herself.

In the chinese belief, such person that kill themselves this way comes back as a vengeful ghost.
