Chaos and Control by Martin Eden
Iraq is in chaos, and the greatest superpower on earth cannot control the conflict it unleashed. Fear brought us into this war and fear will keep us there. We are told repeatedly that if we pull our troops from Iraq, horrors worse than 9/11 will visit our shores and terrorists will reign supreme and spread their contagion throughout the Middle East.
The American people don’t want this war, but even more they do not want to suffer humiliating defeat and the attacks we are told will follow. Our representatives in Washington are immobilized by imperatives pulling in two directions, and the president sees his support disappearing with the prospects for victory.
Despite the chaos and apparent lack of control, this president and the neoconservative architects of this war have us exactly where they want us.
Their agenda relies on fear and chaos, which are essential for taking a putative democracy of 300 million people into an unwanted war and keeping us there. The people do not want to sacrifice their sons in the desert and would rather spend a trillion dollars on schools and roads and health care. The architects of this war want something else. They want to exert control over the wealth and the direction of this world, and to do that they need the power which presumably resides with the people.
Chaos and fear make it possible for a Constitution to be bypassed, for liberties to be abridged, and for a chief executive to claim wartime powers in a vaguely defined war with no end in sight. The lies that become conventional wisdom through repetition in the corporate media keep the people misinformed and our representatives from passing anything beyond a non-binding resolution. Unrestrained, the powers-that-be will take the next step in their agenda: an attack on Iran.
War with Iran will rip the lid off the Pandora’s Box cracked open in Iraq, with chaos and terrorism as far as the eye can see. There is method to this madness. Only through permanent war and terror can the American people be sufficiently controlled. What the people in this country fail to see is that our government is run by a radical cabal intent on committing the United States to an irreversible course that will compel the full application of our military might in forcibly remaking the world to suit their interests.
They are more than willing to spend our blood and our treasure and usurp our democracy, as long as we let them. The impending war with Iran is a potential point of no return. The American people must step forward NOW and take control of their own destiny, or live in perpetual chaos and fear.
