local take on Bush coming for McConnell fundraiser
BUSH FUMBLES AS LOCAL DRIVERS GRUMBLE

Although some might question the wisdom of U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell bringing to town the Republican most responsible for getting Democrats John Yarmuth and Baron Hill elected to the House of Representatives, I say with results like that, "Bring 'em on!"

President Bush will speak at a $2,000-a-seat fundraiser at the Seelbach Hilton at about 5:35 p.m. tomorrow -- just in time for downtown Louisville's rush and happy hours.

It's not all about raising money. Bush also will meet privately with about 40 scholars from the University of Louisville's McConnell Center and tour Silver Street Elementary School in New Albany.

Those stops are very big deals.............continueshttp://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070301/COLUMNISTS05/703010475

NICELY PUT, SARCASTIC PIECE BY LOCAL COLUMNIST

1. At $2,000 a seat, it would be cheaper for the govt. to just give McConnell the $$
Most of the campaign travel will be paid for by the government, including the costs of Air Force One, most of Bush's entourage, and the phalanx of security, transportation and communications equipment that travels ahead to every stop.

White House officials say taxpayers bear those costs, as they did for his predecessors, on the theory that Bush is the president wherever he goes. Under a formula in place since the Reagan administration, Republican state parties and campaigns will reimburse a portion of the cost of any political events, including rental of the hall and hotel rooms for advance staff. Bush often combines his political rallies with an official event, to defray even more of the party's cost. In such cases, the White House apportions the cost of the events according to how much time he spent at each.

Given the payment arrangements, it would be far cheaper for the govt. to just pay McConnell the money Bush is raising, cause we're spending more than that to haul Bush's sorry ass out there.
