Give Exactly What A Chance?

"This country is pursuing a new strategy in Iraq, and I ask you to give it a chance to work."

— George W. Bush, State of the Union Address, 23 January 2007

Go ahead and read that quote once again.

Now, read it one more time.

Take a moment and give the two halves of the sentence time to sink in.

Okay, let’s give this statement some logical thought.

For starters, this should not be one sentence. These are separate concepts, each at odds with the other.

"This country" is not pursuing a new strategy in Iraq.

Lame Dubya is merely adding fuel to the fires that already rage far too intensely over there in the form of priceless brave American lives. But, hey, who can put a price tag on oil or the glory of a Caesar?

George XLIII and his Puppet Masters have once again dispensed with those senior military commanders who had tired of sending young men and women to be slaughtered and maimed in an ongoing exercise in futility, replacing them with the next line of "leaders" willing to swap the flesh and blood of heroes for promotion to a major theater of operations.

2. Dying for words and slogans.

They're plenty loud and they talk all the same. You find them in churches and schools and newspapers and legislatures and congress. That's their business. They sound wonderful. Death before dishonor. This ground sanctified by blood. These men who died so gloriously. They shall not have died in vain. Our noble dead...

But what do the dead say? Did anybody ever come back from the dead any single one of the millions who got killed did any one of them ever come back and say by god I'm glad I'm dead because deeath is always better than dishonor. Did they say I'm glad I died to make the world safe for demorcacy. Did they say I like death better than losing liberty? Did any of them say it's good to think I got my guts blown out for the honor of my country....

So did all those kids die thinking of democracy and feedom and liberty and honor and the safety of the home and stars and stripes forever?

You're godamn right they didn't."
