A growing number of black pastors are speaking out against gays, with many claiming that the "homosexual agenda" is the No. 1 problem facing black America. 4/28

Rev. Gregory Daniels
The Rev. Gregory Daniels says if he 'chose' not to be gay, so can others. And they should, he adds, because homosexuality is destroying black America.

Black Religious Opposition to Gays Rising
By Brentin Mock

Bishop Eddie Long takes to the pulpit wearing a crisp, two-piece suit. Long’s been known to dress down in tight muscle shirts and leather vests when preaching, but for this sermon it's business attire. A flock of young men from his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church near Atlanta surround Long's pulpit.

"We're raising our young boys to be just like the women," he bellows to his congregation, which today numbers more than 25,000 people. "We keep telling men to get in touch with their sensitive self."

Almost 45 minutes into the sermon, captured on a videotape that is for sale in his church's bookstore, Bishop Long grows louder and angrier...........

1. Not surprising at all.
Among my coworkers here in Atlanta, some of the biggest homophobics are church going black men. Just as bad as the rednecks I work with.

2. I guess it is therapeutic for some who suffered bigotry to impart it on someone else
Kind of like Israel is doing to the Palestinians.

4. We like to think that because African Americans have suffered
so much from injustice, inequality, and hate that they would be naturally more sympathetic, have more empathy for the plight of homosexuals in this society. But the particular kind of Christianity that some practice seems to make them callous and hard-hearted. For some reason they seem to think that standing up for everyone's equality and citizen rights will diminish their own; when the opposite is true...

13. As we have seen with Israel, the oppressed became the oppressors
The Latino community also has serious problems with misogyny and homophobia. It is no accident that this is a community whose ancestry was forced to accept the religion of their European slave masters. See an analogy to the Black pastors here?

5. I am so sick of Christians preaching hatred.
Regardless of their color, how do these people "believe" in the teachings of Jesus and hold hatred in their hearts for their fellow man? One of these things aren't true...

7. The Preachers: Mini-Profiles

The Preachers: Mini-Profiles
The white leaders of the anti-gay, evangelical right are well known — James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Lou Sheldon and many others who are virtually household names in America. But black churchmen who have joined the historically white-dominated Christian Right movement against homosexuality and homosexuals are far less familiar to the general public. Here, presented as a complement to longer pieces on Chicago's Rev. Gregory Daniels, the Washington, D.C., area's Bishop Harry Jackson, and the Atlanta area's Bishop Eddie Long, are a series of short profiles of 10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement.

8. Who and how many?
This is a troubling trend, but most of the Black clergy are still preaching tolerance and inclusivity.

I'd also put money on the prospect that some deep-pocketed neo-fascist is pumping money into this.

9. Southern Poverty Law Center, Intelligence Report:
In the interests of background, the original is from SPLC's 'Intelligence Report'.

"What began as a Klanwatch newsletter has become the most prominent publication on extremism in the country. Today the Intelligence Report is an award-winning quarterly magazine reaching over 300,000 subscribers, including more than 60,000 law enforcement personnel."

10. I hear so much, lately, about this so-called "homosexual agenda"
that you would almost think that there are gay recruiting booths set up at the mall. These are the same scare tactics that were used to endorse segregation. There really are a lot of similarities between the attitudes toward the GLBT community now and the black community in the early to mid 20th century. It's the same kind of ignorance.

say anything like this, but as seen up thread, the headline is "Pastors" and "Christians" with the "some" left out. So I conclude there is also a hatred of religion in the media folks reporting these things.

On edit - my error re the media bias showing - it is just the usual DU atheist editing.

The Buzzflash (where the owner is a proud atheist that does try to sell his belief now and then - but has not ever dumped on whole groups):

"A growing number of black pastors are speaking out against gays, with many claiming that the "homosexual agenda" is the No. 1 problem facing black America. 4/28"

And the original article headline:

12. No one forced Bishop Long to be Black. With Jesus help he can become white!
I have seen these scum come to our legislature decrying that homosexuals have a choice to become hetero, and demanding the state constitution be changed to turn gays and lesbians into the "Negroes" of the 21st century.

How pathetic that they adopted the religion of their slave masters!

If Rev. Daniels doesn't have to back up his ridiculous claims, neither do I.
