Now... Is This The Summer Of Our Discontent?

In recent weeks, on various websites across the 'Net, several people have posted interesting comments about the real state of our nation, especially during this time when we see AG Gonzales openly condone lawbreaking during committee testimony, while Dick Cheney threatens war with Iran from the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Some have expressed concern that the frontloading of the Presidential primaries during the end of January and early February of 2008 will make America "ungovernable". Sen. Chuck Hagel told told the Center for National Policy in Washington on Wednesday that the early-scheduling of the U.S. presidential primaries "has paralyzed, locked down our ability to govern" during a time when a bipartisan consensus is needed to solve the problem of ending the IraqNam War.

What the good Senator seems to have forgotten is that the locking down and paralyzing of Congress's ability to govern began long before the early-scheduling of the 2008 Presidential primaries. It began when the Congress passed the so-called PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act and gave its blessing to extraordinary rendition, illegal wiretaps, the heedless rush to occupy Iraq based on fraudulent "intellegence" data, and detention of American citizens on the flimisiest of charges.

Even though many in their constituencies knew that these actions were wrong, few in both houses of Congress didn't want to deal with these issues. They were too busy engaging in their bipartisan cultivating of wealthy campaign donors and corporate fatcats who promise them obscene amounts of money for their political campaigns in exchange for political favors.

In the meantime, the American who's at the lower 80% of family income brackets is angry, frustrated and disgusted by the cowardice being exhibited by the members of Congress when it comes to the vital issues which they must deal with, from a collapsing economy and lost jobs to the absolute necessity of ending the IraqNam War and the impeachment of Cheney and Bush.

snip//

Will this become the summer of our discontent, when we demand that Congress DO the right thing and impeach Cheney and Bush now, or are we going to allow ourselves to be lulled into a stupor by the latest celebrity scandal-of-the-week which is carefully designed to keep our minds off of the matters at hand -- the impeahcment of Cheney and Bush and the demand that our elected resprentatives take responsibility for the governing of the nation instead of the reckless pursuit of power and money?

1. Meh.
I don't expect much, if anything to change. I am resigned to that fact. Maybe some stuff from the DoJ thing, but they might well find a way to screw that pooch too.

2. We don't have any support in Congress
Our elected reps have sold us out.
I'm way pissed. I think the tone on the board tonight ((in spite of the mods eliminating "inflammatory" - (read:anti-Democrat) posts)) is indicative of this fact.
ONLY IF WE TAKE TO THE STREETS THIS SUMMER will we'll be noticed.

3. The "paralyzing" of our government is ongoing--the 2008 elections
just make it worse. None of the Dems in Congress want to jeopardize their majority for '08 by failing in an effort to impeach. So that's one more thing that won't get done--add it to the pile.
