Katrina Aid Goes Toward Football Condos
Katrina Aid Goes Toward Football Condos

With large swaths of the Gulf Coast still in ruins from Hurricane Katrina, rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos near the University of Alabama's football stadium.

About 10 condominium projects are going up in and around Tuscaloosa, and builders are asking up to $1 million for units with granite countertops, king-size bathtubs and 'Bama decor, including crimson couches and Bear Bryant wall art.

While many of the buyers are Crimson Tide alumni or ardent football fans not entitled to any special Katrina-related tax breaks, many others are real estate investors who are purchasing the condos with plans to rent them out.

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

7. No, the problem here is that the government is helping only those who don't need help.
The rich get the aid to build luxury dwellings while the poor continue to live in poisonous trailers.

Something is deeply wrong with this picture.

8. Agreed
I guess my point was that, by and large, government is about the worst solution to any problem, as illustrated particularly clearly here.

3. Ridiculous. Helping people who lost their homes and

had losses not covered by insurance is what the money was intended for.

Helping investors to buy condos to rent out to football fans??? I hope they lose their asses on this.

4. Well color me surprised....not.
Absolutely disgusting, but not surprising. Unfortunately, not surprising at all.

This fucking government believes in taking care of fat-cat CEO's and their corporations. Those who really need help can go fuck themselves.

I'd say UFB, but it is FB. The corruption and greed in this country is absolutely staggering, and I think I've lost hope that this juggernaut can ever be stopped. Sigh.

Hmm, I wonder how many "illegals" are building those condos and shopping centers...
