Gallup poll shows only 5% of Republicans are Hispanic, 2% are black
Excerpt:

While controversy rages over heated attacks on President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, a new Gallup poll reveals that Hispanics make up only 5% of the Republican party.

The Gallup poll also shows that 89% of Republicans are white and 63% of white Republicans are conservative. Approximately half of non-Hispanic white Republicans are strongly religious (those who attend church at least once a week).

The Republican party has been in disarray since the overwhelming defeat it endured in the November 2008 elections. Some in the party seem to realize that the party needs to reach out to more people but many Republicans appear to believe that the party needs to become even more conservative and exclusive than it is at present.

1. This is no surprise to me.
Now all they need do is restrict minority rights to vote and the GOP can amass more political power. Good luck with that.

2. Why would any black person be a republican?
I'd really like to know. Is it self-loathing? Hypocrisy? Simple confusion?

When I see guys like Joe Watkins and that goofball Ron Christie on TV shilling for the wingnuts, I have to assume they are getting paid so much that principles simply don't matter.

The fact is, if either of these commentators drifted into a small southern town, I wouldn't want to be responsible for their safety. Why would they identify so closely with their tormentors? Why would any black person be a republican?

3. Interesting. I'd like to see a regional breakdown.
I assume that would confirm that the GOP is becoming a mostly Southern party.
