According to blog.seattlepi.com, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who set up a task force to deal with climate change when she was governor, on Monday lampooned studies supporting global warming as a “bunch of snake oil science.”Palin spoke in Redding, Calif., to the Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference, an event from which the media was barred. The Associated Press bought a $74 ticket and reported on the event.
The 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate continued her criticism of environmental laws – which include tighter standards on emission of greenhouse gases – enacted under California’s Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger has been a leader in the Western Climate Initiative, a coalition of governors from the West and premiers of three provinces in Western Canada. Gov. Chris Gregoire of Washington and British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell are also leaders in the initiative.
On Monday, however, Palin argued that environmental regulations in California hamper business.
She also took out after the federal government’s decision, made while the Bush administration was in office, to list polar bears as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Those promoting polar bear listing really want to shut down oil and gas leasing in Arctic coastal waters off Alaska, Palin argued.
“We knew the bottom line . . . was ultimately to shut down a lot of our development,” Palin told the loggers. “And it didn’t make any sense because it was based on these global warming studies that now we’re seeing (is) a bunch of snake oil science.”
