Both Ford and GM demanded, and got, reparations from the United States because we blew up Ford and GM factories in Axis countries that were making Nazi war machines.

The warmongers have always made their living selling to both sides in a war.

Our addiction to foreign oil is killing our economy and now, with 3 oil wars, it is killing our sons and daughters.

You're not paying that at the pump because of subsidies, tax breaks, free land giveaways for oil exploration, military assistance to oil, and a total lack of accountability for the medical bills they cause people.

4. The realities of this economy aren't that simple

Not all people live within biking distance of work, nor can they.

People are stuck in mortgages that are underwater, or they've been wiped out and all they could afford is a tiny apartment, either of which might force them to be stuck in an area far away from work and makes biking to work impossible.

6. Very true, but long-term planning is still possible

...once you know what the future is likely to look like, planning to live well in it is possible. The realities of this economy were realities three years ago as well - which is when I started changing some things myself.

I include my family in that category now since I became disabled. I looked at the bank statement just the other day and it hit me: if we miss one paycheck we are screwed -- we could lose everything.

Long term planning is all well and good to talk about in the abstract. But when changes happen, when someone gets ill, when someone gets their hours reduced at work, laid off, or downsized, all your plans go out the window. 20/20 hindsight would be just peachy if it worked a little bit ahead of time.

PS, I understand your point, but you also need to remember what they say about the best laid plans...

by keeping us hooked on the product and buying up and warehousing or slow-walking replacement technology.
