Pirate Parties: from digital rights to political power
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15288907

The German Pirate Party saw a surge in support in Berlin's recent state elections, with all 15 of its candidates winning seats in the state parliament.

The party's success comes amid growing support for the movement in other countries, including Australia, Russia, Tunisia and Mexico.

Initially pirate parties made the news by bringing the subject of digital file-sharing to public attention, but more recently they have scored notable election successes.

This has been achieved in part through their exceptional internet and social media skills, and clever branding; one party has even set up its own WikiLeaks-like whistleblowing site.

2. What Programmers sit around all day, often
for over 12 hours, that's not even working...why should they have any rights to the final product? :sarcasm:

5. Well aren't you precious
going and thinking digital rights only apply to napster and other bandit sites. I highly doubt your OS runs on MP3's and if you might have noticed you are posting on a copyrighted piece of software owned by the DU corporation.

4. It doesn't seem like they want to take anything.
It looks like they want everything to be transparent.

Information is power...let's see where this goes.

6. Most pirate parties operate on the premise that everything invented
or created stems from public domain so copyrights actually stymie creativity. They are mainly asking for shorter copyright periods instead of lifetime plus 70 years which is ridiculous.

A great example of taking something that is highly copyrighted and making it something else is this:

Just an example

The can be the Barbary Pirate Party (Yes, I know the Barbary Pirates operated in what is today Libya -- but it's possible they holed in parts of Northern Tunisia - maybe)
