Delegates' purple-heart bandages diminish the wounded, and themselves
Delegates' purple-heart bandages diminish the wounded, and themselves

Sheila Lennon at the Providence Journal:

These aren't protesters in the streets, "anarchists": These are official delegates and GOP party leaders, during their televised pitch to the nation to continue their control of the White House and Congress, making fun of awards for wounds incurred by our troops.

Delegates like Pat Peale may be the only purple-heart wearers in history to display the award in advance of shooting themselves in the foot.

In the midst of a scripted convention during an unpopular war that has officially claimed 974 American lives and resulted in some 3,700 purple hearts being awarded to its wounded, this Mad Magazine gigglefest by GOP leaders recalls nothing so much as the John Lennon line, "But the one thing you can't hide is when you're crippled inside."

1. They have just ticked off every veteran
and every family member of a veteran. This will come back to haunt them. I sort of hope one of those fools runs into a REAL veteran or a mother of one of the folks recently killed in Iraq. I hope the vet or mother looks them in the eye-hard. Bet I know who will lower their gaze first.

2. This is going to bite them in the ass...

Imagine the wounded vets sitting in Walter Reed watching this disgusting mockery while they struggle to learn how to cope with missing limbs. The one thing they get to show for their sacrifice is that purple heart, which they will show to their kids, and these a-holes are making a mockery of it. Throw them on the killing fields and let them earn those goddamned purple hearts. 'I cut myself shaving so I awarded myself this purple heart.' I really want to puke right now. God damn these pieces of shit straight to hell.

5. Take the poll
There's a poll on the Providence Journal homepage under that headline that asks,
Do you think the "purple heart bandages" that some GOP delegates wore at the convention are in poor taste?

It's 4-1 yes, although not a lot of people are answering it. Maybe they just put it up.
