Political and hip-hop industry leaders are kicking off an effort to register 4 million new voters for the November general election at a "Hip Hop Summit" in Houston scheduled during Super Bowl week.

"There is a new movement. It is hip hop ... it is the civil rights movement of the 21st century," said U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, among local political leaders and hip-hop artists announcing the event Thursday at Texas Southern University.

The event will draw top hip-hop artists such as Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, Lil' Romeo and Master P and feature DefJam Records founder Russell Simmons, who also started the Hip Hop Summit Action Network.

Houston recording artist and six-time Grammy winner Beyoncé Knowles also is expected to attend the event.

The artists will not perform but instead lead discussions.

This is great--GOTV with primarily black youth. I hope it has great success. In the article, they mention that admission is free but one must be registered to vote in order to attend.

3. If Eminem were performing,
I'd be there. He's great and so solidly anti-Bush.

7. This is fantastic!
What a great idea... I'm so glad to see this happening. Back when we were hearing the drums of war getting louder, I was lamenting the fact that so few artists are politically active. This is really good, good news. :D

Where are the other genre's artists? Let's hope they take note and take similar action!

8. Let’s encourage everyone!

Just like the 50’s folk singers did, (who were labeled Communist by this same media & the fascist republicans) and as did many musicians in the 60’s, who helped raise consciousness and truly got people fired up.

Everyone must be spoken with, or we won’t have a chance for freedom again. NOW!

This is fact and what the fascist are counting on (complicity & passivity)…speak to everyone, no matter how distance they seem from your point of view. That’s what grassroots organization is all about.
