2. So, Paul Weyrich is still around.
I remember he said, just after Ronnie was elected in 1980, "We aren't going to ALLOW people to be sinful after we take over!". That was scary...

But it's wishful thinkin, IMO, to predict that the RW will not vote this year; they know which is the best game in town for them, and will vote for bush. Especially when they consider SCOTUS appointments to be made in the future.

3. He is going to rope them all back in with his appointment of Pickering
to the Federal Court of Appeals. He is trying to tell his conservatives "don't worry, I am only giving the appearance of moving to the center. It's an election year."

7. This is actually very frightening. If they aren't afraid of alienating
actual conservatives, it could mean either that the 'fix' is in for the elections or that they might not even be held.

Need some more tinfoil I guess...

8. Wishful thinking.
The right won't sit out an election. They know that would mean a Democrat in office. No matter how mad they may be at Bush, they hate Democrats. They will turn out and vote.

17. The 'Right' is not monolithic.
There are still a lot of old-fashioned main-stream, Main Street Repubs out there. They are conservative, but not lunatics.

The Gingrich Revolution was an alliance that pulled together incompatible fringe groups (Libertarian, Religious Fundies, White Supremacists, Gun Nuts, Militas) with traditional Repubs.

It was always fragile. I think it survived as long as it did only because Weyrich, Gingrich, et al were able to intimidate the press and the Dems.

9. "true conservatives" can F*** THEMSELVES
they supported the theft of democracy, rallied abound this piece of shit after his dereliction of duty allowed the events of 9/11 to happen, allowed Halliburton's invasion of Iraq, allowed the trashing of our economy . . . . oh so NOW they are pissed? THEY CAN F*** THEMSELVES.

10. Imagine the reverse...
If a Democratic President were really messing things up badly, and it was a choice between said Democrat and a main-line member of the Republican party, say Sen. Santorum, who would we all vote for? You all know the answer.

That's the same way they see it, just in reverse.

12. Uhhh, we had a two-termer's VP up for election
and many of us voted Green. Major ooooooooops. Clinton/Gore didn't mess anything up, and G.W. Bush was running for Pres. Ross Perot pealed off an enormous number of "balance-the-budget" conservatives. This isn't to say that the same thing can or will happen with the repubs. this year; it simply means that progressives may hold tightly to their ideals (and then get their faces kicked in) and that there is, in fact, an historical example that answers your above hypothetical.

15. True Conservatives
No, actually, they don't support the Chimp in Chief. Bob Barr was vocal and active in opposing the Patriot Act and the unlimited detentions at Guantanomo. Others have been alienated by the Chimps irresponsible fiscal behavior. Before you issue a blanket statement against conservatives, how much tangible opposition has Chimpy had from either House or Senate Democrats? Daschle and Hillary have enabled him in every endeavor.

14. I think you are wrong. Reason?
He is doing every thing to toe in the Christian base. Which for some reason I do not understand, seems to love war and the 'honor' of letting young men die for their country. The money spending is just buying votes.Big time.

18. But what about the Libertarian Ayn Randers?
The Christian base is only a part of that coalition. Reagan, for example, gave lip-service to the Fundies, but never much of substance.

Sucking up to loonies has to be done in discrete steps.

Hard to put it down. O'Neill is an impressive man, and the book is based on meticulously kept notes from the very start. Only eyestrain is holding me back reading this book.

21. These...
..."true conservatives" are typically even worse than Bush. They are basically complaining that he's too liberal! They will NEVER vote for a Democrat. However, just them staying home on election day is good enough for me.
