35. mp3 & vp3 here
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 11:14 PM by Wonk
1 M mp3

14 M vp3
It plays with QuickTime player. Vp3 is an awesome new (well, fairly new) codec, providing better quality video and smaller file sizes than Sorenson3, which is what I used to use.

To install the vp3 codec in your quicktime player, download this (or any vp3) movie file to disk, then try opening it with quicktime player, which will then ask if you want it to download the vp3 codec from Apple, then just pick yes.

13. It was a short segment
They showed Maryland's SoS demonstrating the touch screens. Then they showed Rubin at a computer screen demonstrating how a vote could be tampered. Then they read the Diebold memo that said the smart cards could be tampered with. Then they said that Diebold said they upgraded the cards. Then they showed Bev who said it is not just the smart cards but the programming. They mentioned Diebold said they have upped the number of programmers. Then the SoS said that a voter receipt is just a false sense of security. Then they had Bev who said, no it is not a false sense of security, its our vote. Then they mentioned California and their problems with Diebold and said California will be using receipts in November.

They ended with CNN saying this situation will be closely monitored tomorrow, but didn't mention by who.

That's all I remember.

28. Here's the Ringer to Watch for Tomorrow's Story Slant
"They ended with CNN saying this situation will be closely monitored tomorrow, but didn't mention by who."

Watch for pieces on how "trouble free" and "accurate" the election is. Watch for no one to point out that there is no way to know.

This was the kicker to the next story. I have some reservations, obviously, of how they will handle it.

Watch out for "head in the sand" analysis.

I hope not but if the did end with that, it makes me wonder.

14. Look, they've got their work cut out trying to photograph me
I didn't want to do photoshoots, TV or documentaries, but finally decided it's the only way to get public awareness. But, nostamj is right, because guess what:

BBV is going to be the FEATURE ARTICLE of the next Vanity Fair, on newsstands March 10. A large magazine article is 3,000 words. Vanity Fair assigned 7,000 words -- and then became so involved in the story they made it 10,000 words!

I hear there is a picture of Rob Behler in the article too. I am so gratified that this honest man is getting the kudos he deserves. A Vanity Fair photo shoot, and Adam Cohen, who is on the New York Times editorial board, flew to Georgia to meet Rob.

We are nudging this ever foward.

Watch for an announcement tonight from BBV about tomorrow's elections.

6. pretty short but good points were made

covered the open source code, hacking it.

md official said 'alls fine, no paper needed'

Bev disagreed. she only had tiny sound bites.

they also showed a Diebold memo about no security with the cards.

gotta start somewhere!

10. That memo is a damaging one.... here it is now:
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 05:31 PM by BevHarris
http://www.blackboxvoting.org/smartcardmemo.html

"Note that distributing this software is extremely dangerous. Our smart card format has absolutely no security, so if someone were to get a copy of this software and a reader, they could stand at the ballot station and quietly burn new voter cards all day. Of course that's also the case with PollBook.exe, but a notebook computer is a little harder to smuggle into a polling place, and besides most of our staff has trouble setting up a poll book, let alone outsiders. The Card Manager (Spyrus) is actually simple to use. Anyway, I can see the cover of USA Today in my head. Consider everyone warned."

They like to claim they fixed everything. Sorry, Diebold, something else you don't know I have: The release notes to GEMS 1.18.18. They did NOT correct the security problems with GEMS!

I saw the whole presentation and I think CNN did a crappy job of reporting the issues and real problem with the machines. As a whole I don't think the correspondent grasped that the results could be tampered with and the actual tablulation of the votes could be manipulated.

For instance, Bev claimed that a single programmer could manipulate "millions" of votes to which CNN got a Diebold response that they (Diebold) were "carefully screening THEIR programmers."

Bull! Their programmers are not the problem, it's their crappy software that can allow ANY programmer to hack it.

I guess I should be happy that it finally made "big-time" news.

on edit: Thank you Bev. You're one helluva soldier :yourock:

18. IMHO....
(I didn't realize there was a dupe, I wondered why so few responses to it... anyway):

:boring: I guess I should be "tickled" that the subject was even brought up on Blitzer's show, but when you just said it was... "just in passing without depth" that is a monumental understatment. I tried to view it as a completely "uninformed" viewer would, and it certainly didn't "alarm" me. Of course, with my perspective, I thought they should have been screaming to the rooftops at how dangerous the situation is and how it is THE greatest threat to democracy as we know it.

Instead, they show that "person" who is in charge of the machines in Maryland (?) saying that she thought having a paper copy was just SO unnecessary; then they had the little clip of what could have been construed as a rebuff by Bev Harris as she said, "It's just our vote". Well, taken out of context that could mean anything.

Yes, I'm glad it showed up in the mainstream media at all. Did it make a strong impression, and was the story very well done? The answer to that is still a resounding NO!

23. I would like to note that
everyone's favorite Diebold defenders are once again absent. They crawled out of their holes last week when the idiot judge in California ruled that voting machines are *just* fine.

Now that more bad news is comind out for Diebold (NYT, CNN and Vanity Fair), they crawl back into their holes and don't make a peep.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040302/ap_on_hi_te/e_voting_s_biggest_test_1

"The modernization of the nation's voting infrastructure is long overdue," said Alfie Charles, spokesman for Oakland-based Sequoia, which builds the machines as many as 4 million voters in California and Maryland will use Tuesday.

But computer scientists have been protesting the switch. They're particularly concerned that few of the computers provide paper records, making it nearly impossible to have meaningful recounts, or to prove that vote tampering hasn't occurred.

Politicians, voter-rights advocates and even some secretaries of state have recently acknowledged that the systems could theoretically fail — with catastrophic consequences.
