Governor Ahhhhnahld now in favour of gay marriage
(Los Angeles, California) California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has made a 180 degree shift and now says he doesn't object to same-sex marriage, if the law were changed to permit it.

Appearing Monday night on NBC's Tonight Show, Schwarzenegger said gay marriage would be "fine with me" if it were enshrined in state law or ruled legal by the courts.

Host Jay Leno asked, "Would you have any problem if they changed the law?" the governor replied: "No, I don't have a problem. Let the court decide. Let the people decide."

Assembly Member Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) has introduced a bill in the legislature to allow gays and lesbians to obtain marriage licenses (story) and Schwarzenegger's remarks are seen as an endorsement.

Pressed about Proposition 22 which is broadly interpreted as limiting marriage to a man and a woman, Schwarzenegger indicated he would be supportive of moves to repeal the contentious law.

What does this mean? Simple. The strategists behind Ahnahld know that bigotry is a LOSER for the REPUBLICANS and so they're distancing themselves from it.

All the pink tutu Democrats throwing gays to the wolves on this issue are making a huge mistake and creating an opening for third party gadflies to take votes. The saddest thing is, the party leadership could be taking ADVANTAGE of this crack-up in the GOP to gain an edge, but instead, they're attacking the victims. Ugh.

sinking ship. Maybe someone read him the CA constitution. The fact that 3 judges in CA have all so far refused to stop the weddings might be a clue.

And as you said, it's a damn shame that the front runner dems don't have the sense or spine to actually come out and say this. Pathetic when a Repuke can change his tune to sound more civil rights aware than our likely Dem candidate.

7. No, I just think he's lying like a Soviet
He didn't "change his mind".

He'll tell the sheep who watch "The Tonight Show" and his good buddy Sellout Leno one things then in absoultely good faith and moral righteousness say another thing to the Bushevik Base of Freepers, Brownshirts, Dupes, and Mean Mental Defectives.

Then when it comes down to it, he will obey the orders of his Bushevik Masters who will tell Raygun-Hair Gropenfuhrer EXACTLY what he thinks and EXACTLY what to do.

You think anyone will notice the Orwellian Lies? They haven't so far.

4. this is great, it's a good wedge issue for Dems
because it really explodes one of the huge divides within the GOP: that between the moderate secular libertarian types, and the Religious Right who basically control the party.

The key is to force Bush to identify with the Religious Right. To highlight his ties, and the fact, for example, that every GOP congressional leader has a 100% rating from the Christian Coalition, and are in fact self-proclaimed religious right fundamentalists committed to imposing their version of "christianity" onto the country.

The Religious Right takes over the GOP: details here: http://www.TheocracyWatch.org/

6. I've been saying this for years, but. . .
. . . so many "moderates" are terrified of the GOP's culturekampf that they don't want to force the issue -- even when it's a winner for us.

So far, the division gay marriage has caused is mostly in the Republican party, and it's tearing their "coalition" (which was already frayed) to shreds. And some people are still arguing that we should just ignore it and hope it goes away?

5. He's being shrewd,,
By "acting" like a democrat NOW, he can get the "bipartisan" support he will need later to be in position to stab his new "friends" in the back..

I will bet money that we will be seeing a whole bunch of Georgie between now and Nov. There will be fundraisers like there is no tomorrow.. The polls will say what a great guy Ahhnold is and how "popular" * is.. oooh the race is close... Calif is in "play".. and then the diebold factor is rolled out , and * "wins" CA.. Who's to know?? No recount this time, folks..

The pundits will all say.. "it's bipartisan cooperation due to ahhhnold's magnificent governating..:(

Pretty cool!

I guess the party that's being "wedged" apart by this might end up being the Republicans.

13. I think Ahhhnold is a closet liberal
We already know he's a libertine. He's been in Hollywood a long time, and his behavior in the past, regarding sex, has been "anything goes". I suspect he doesn't really have an objection to gay marriage.

Much as people like to diss Arnold, I just can't get too upset about him.
