Just another example of corporate greed treating people like sewage.
News storyThomson (RCA Brand) announced to 990 employees at its Marion, Indiana plant yesterday that they were fired, immediately. They also announced that they were closing a plant in Ohio, with another 545 jobs.
The reason cited by company officials was "the slow US economy".
WTF? I thought this economy was strong and getting stronger according to the Republicans.
GOP contenders for the governors office used this bad news to criticize Democrat Governor Joe Kernan. "We need a governor who knows how to help businesses grow and prosper in Indiana -- not a governor who sits idly by as more businesses close their doors." stated GOP hack Jim Kittle.
Of course these morons don't have a single clue about what to do to prevent the flow of manufacturing jobs to Mexico and China, and Bush's henchmen are saying this is good for the US economy, so what are these dolts complaining about?
It was only 15 years ago that RCA made its 50 millionth television at its plant in Bloomington, Indiana (now closed). At that time the plant was the largest TV plant in the world. Today, there are no longer any televisions made in Indiana.
Workers at the plant averaged $15.98 per hour. Thomson's plant in Mexicali Mexico pays their workers $2.30. And that wage eclipses the $.30 per hour they pay in China. Mexico's future would appear to be tenuous, even though the plant (which employs 1850) workers only opened in 2001. The plant will stay, so that they can move product from China into Mexico to take advantage of NAFTA to move goods into the US without import duties, but my guess is the Mexicans will start seeing a decline in their employment levels as the work is shifted to the TCL operations in China, which purchased a majority of the TV operations from Thomson this year.
