...on the day that Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin is assassinated by Israel...

coincidence?

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan puts out a message from the White House that Israel "had a right to defend itself"

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan decries the assassination as a distinct violation of International Law...

...sounds like another State sponsored assassination to me!

1. McClellan said more than once that Israel had a right to defend itself
that puzzled me--how does assassinating a quadraplegic who is in a wheelchair, constitute a "defense" of itself?

I think it was a talking point. Many others will simply pick it up to defend this assassination as a pre-emtive, or pre-ventative attack.
