Required reading for all DUers
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 03:27 PM by air napkin
All right, since I'm not a donor, I couldn't create a poll, so I decided to form it into just a general question. Do you agree with this reading list for DUers?

1. "The Price of Loyalty: George W. Bush, The White House, and the Education of Paul O'Neill" by Ron Suskind

2. "Against All Enemies," Richard Clarke

3. "The Lies of George W. Bush," David Corn

4. "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy," Greg Palast

5. "House of Bush, House of Saud: The Secret Relationship Between The World's Two Most Powerful Dynasties," by Craig Unger

6. "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look At The Right," by Al Franken

I personally think there should be more--but what do you think?

Absolutely required reading for all progresives.

"When Corporations Rule the World" by David Korten

The truth about multi-national corporations and the WTO. When a former Republican has Bishop Desmond Tutu caling a book a "must-read," it is.

Any more that you guys think should be absolutely REQUIRED of all DUers? I'm thinking of putting up a list for especially brave DUers who think they can stomach reading *gasp!* O'Reilly, Hannity, and Coulter (purely for laughs and to see just how deluded they are.)

20. I'm reading "The Clinton Wars" now --
so much (as a Brit) I had no idea about. Still can't quite believe how the obsessive & vindictive the whole "Get Clinton" hunt was. Anyway, on the first 300-odd pages I'd highly, highly recommend this book.

7. I recommend American Dynasty by Kevin Phillips
Subtitle: Aristocracy, Fortune, and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush.

The book (written by another Republican!) is a biography of four generations of Bushes. It's a real eye-opener. These guys have been manipulating, stealing, and amassing wealth since the mid-19th century, all the time pretending to be "of the people."

Kind of rips the rug out from under Republican attempts to smear Kerry for being wealthy and privileged.

16. "ROGUE STATE" by T.D. Allman
I just picked up an EXCELLENT Bush-bashing book at Barnes & Noble and even though I've only read the first 40 pages of it, already I can tell it's a GREAT book. The full title (wouldn't fit in subject line) is

ROGUE STATE
America at War
With the World

by T.D. Allman

The title of the Prologue is "The Most Dangerous Man in the World" and I'll type in the first two paragraphs for you ... well, no I won't, as much as I would love to, because I just read the copyright information and I'm not sure I can legally do that ("No part of this publication may be reproduced ... except by a reviewer who wishes to quote brief passages ... for ... a magazine, newspaper or broadcast." I guess I would be the "reviewer," but could a post on an Internet message board be considered a "broadcast"? If so, then I could do it, but I'm not sure, so I won't) or that it won't violate DU posting rules. But you can tell what the book is about from its title and the prologue's title. It's a Nation Books paperbook and sells for $14.95.

19. update 2

7. "Blinded By The Right," by David Brock (courtesy of Mom_and_Dad)

8. "When Corporations Rule The World", by David Corten (courtesy of Mouse7)

The next few are courtesy of "nostamj":

9. "Big Lies", by Joe Conason

10. "Dude, Where's My Country?", by Michael Moore

11. "Bushwhacked!", by Molly Ivins

12. "Dreaming War," by Gore Vidal

13. "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace," by Gore Vidal

14. "Black Box Voting," by Bev Harris

15. "The Great Unraveling," by Paul Krugman

16. "The Greatest Sedition is Silence," by William Pitt

17. "The Clinton Wars," by Sidney Blumenthal

18. "American Dynasty," by Kevin Phillips (courtesy of yardwork)

19. "Rogue State," by T.D. Allman (courtesy of Jeebo)

I'm only choosing the ones I think should be ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED. Some can just be read on the side--I had qualms about Moore's books being up here...I don't know if he's exactly "required reading," but he's funny as hell.

Here's some more of mine people may not have heard of:

20. "Is Our Children Learning?: The Case Against President George W. Bush," by Paul Begala

21. "Jews For Buchanan," John Nichols

Remember: REQUIRED READING!

18. Eric Alterman's "What Liberal Media." A must read to see how
the Media manipulates and how it started it's decline during the Clinton administration. Has a some good stuff about the "financial media" also.

It's an interesting and quick read.

23. "Thieves in High Places" by Jim Hightower
The full title is "Thieves in High Places: They've Stolen Our Country and It's Time to Take It Back". It covers a lot of subject matter, and if humor has any value as a tool of persuasion, this book is priceless. It has one of the two best anti-Wal-Mart chapters I've ever read, Chapter 10 entitled "Wal-Mart: How to Play Beat the Devil." (The other best anti-Wal-Mart chapter is "What Price a Store-Gasm" in Greg Palast's book, "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy".)
