1. My father is now calling it IraqNam
The Sunnis and the Shia-normally enemies-are uniting against the occupiers. And our young men and women are being attacked because of the oilgarchy in DC.

5. Was "oilgarchy" a Freudian slip? It works--even if a typo. nt

WH correspondent, saying that the Chimpy hideout is worried about the public perception moving toward the "Q" word.

15. By the way, in my other post here (#14), there is CBS contact info.
IF THEY THINK WE DON'T CARE, THEY WON'T, EITHER!!!!!!

That applies across the board, to EVERYONE in the media. EVERYONE who writes for, edits, and publishes the newspapers and news magazines. EVERYONE who assigns, produces, writes, reports, and anchors on regular TV or cable. AND ESPECIALLY, it applies to EVERY LAST ONE OF OUR REPS. NOT JUST THE APPROACHABLE (Democratic) ones, but also the oppositional (republi-CON) ones. THEY are the ones who MOST need to hear from us. Otherwise they'll just assume that everybody agrees with them, like Flush and Vanity do.

3. I'd prefer not to
"Quagmire" sounds way too flippant to describe this situation in Iraq.

"Tragedy" seems more appropriate, unfortunately. :-( :-(

8. Tonight on NBC News and MSNBC Hardball and Olberman, Aspell said:
Tom Aspell, NBC correspondent in Iraq said, "This is the most intense fighting since the end of the war."

End of the war? WTF? The war has never ended. Maybe Tom Aspell means since Chimpy did his vainglorious strut of the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln and declare "Mission Accomplished." But then there was "Bring 'em on!" Seems they have. Yet again.

Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 07:59 PM by oldcoot
One of the reasons that I opposed this war was that I did not believe that Bush had an exit strategy. It was clear from the very beginning that the Bush administration had no grasp on reality. The "hawks" in this administration even ignored other members of the administration who contradicted their rosy world view. Unfortunately for us, they are so arrogant that they are incapable of admitting that they made a mistake so they are only going to dig themselves and us into a deeper hole.

10. Quagmire/Zugzwang
quag·mire n.
1. Land with a soft muddy surface.
2. A difficult or precarious situation; a predicament.

zug·zwang n.
1. A situation in a chess game in which a player is forced to make an undesirable or disadvantageous move.

I'd say it's more of a zugzwang. We have to do something, but any move we make makes the situation worse.

- clamp down hard, and confirm the claims of the resistance and Sadrists
- leave Iraq, all hell breaks loose
- sit around and wait for the storm to pass, emboldens the resistance

Funny, I didn't even consider the obvious best thing to do because it will never happen with Bush*: secure a UNSC resolution ands get some troops from Muslim countries to patrol the hotspots. At the moment however, I doubt any country is going to supply more troops, except for the US and the Iraqis we're training.

A zugzwang.

11. The out is easy...
Get on our knees in front of the UN National Assembly, agree to whatever they want, then run like hell 10 seconds after a resolution is passed.

Then open up the checkbook and pay for this cluster fuck. It'd be lots cheaper than stumbling around over there like we are now.

17. No - what we have to do is elect John Kerry, who can then go to the UN
with dignity still intact, and simply announce to them that "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. Let's talk." Seems to me from everything I read and hear, the rest of the world will be MORE than delighted to do so. Believe me, they want bush gone as much as we do, here at DU (and more and more, in other places around the country - as this goes from bad to worse, I suspect).

But "quagfire" is good, quite good (and more publishable).
