Prime Minister Paul Martin to travel to Washington

Prime Minister Paul Martin will visit Washington, D.C. on Thursday, April 29 and Friday, April 30, 2004.

The Prime Minister will meet with President George W. Bush at the White House on April 30 to review key bilateral and multilateral issues.

The Prime Minister and the President will meet in the Oval Office and continue their discussions over a lunch in the White House.

The Prime Minister looks forward to the opportunity to review progress on issues of mutual interest, including the campaign against terrorism.

The Prime Minister’s programme in Washington will also include meetings with Congressional and non-governmental leaders. A detailed itinerary will follow at a later date.

1. Well, that pushes the election back yet farther.

We were expecting a Federal Election in May. I can't see Martin wanting to go to the polls immediately after meeting Bush.

2. I just sent Martin this email:

Dear Prime Minister Martin,

I am an American citizen writing to you to urge you to cancel your meeting with President Bush this month. I appreciate your intention of showing respect to my country, but the best thing you can do for the USA, and for Canada, is to have nothing to do with George W. Bush. I assure you he has no respect for the nation or people of Canada. His only purpose in inviting you is to use photos of your visit to give the impression that he is respected by world leaders. I am sure you know that the list of world leaders who respect Mr. Bush is very short, and I assume you are not on it. Look how shabbily Bush treated the UK after Tony Blair bent over backwards to enable Bush's reckless foreign policy for an example of how Bush treats his "friends".

I beg you to show some self-respect and integrity and cancel this meeting. When the press asks why, you can explain that you hope to meet next January with an American president who actually understands international affairs. Meeting with Bush would imply tacit approval on your part of our aggressive neo-colonial foreign policy. Under George Bush the United States has given up whatever claim we had to leadership in the areas of democracy, human rights, and international security. Canada is in an excellent position to assume this role. Taking a strong stance against my lying, warmongering president would be an excellent first step.

6. Actually, I'll bet Martin doesn't mind Bush.

Martin is totally without backbone. He's an indecisive little man whose life is dictated by internal polls and focus groups. He is an unworthy leader of Canada. He is a poor replacement for Jean Chretien when it comes to Foreign Affairs.

3. Sorry guys. Leaders have to meet.

Especially neighbors. Of course the two should meet. I hope Martin does a good job for his citizen in standing up to the United States.

How many world leaders visit North Korea or Myanmar? Bush has turned the US into a rogue state, and as long as he's in office we should be treated as such.
