Why are we not demanding Rumsfeld's resignation
After hearing the news yesterday, I was sure i would find the DU boards full of demands for Rumsfeld's resignation. All I find is still squabbling over talking points of the tortures in Iraq. (don't call it abuse, it is torture pure and simple)

Should we not be demanding he step down as Nancy Pelosi and others on Capitol Hill have done publicly. Or are we just going to indulge ourselves in nit picking the stories coming out and searching for good arguments.

This is one of the rare moments in history that DU could actually effect the political process and it appears we are presently asleep at the wheel

WASHINGTON — A high-ranking House Democrat on Wednesday took Donald Rumsfeld (search) to task, saying the defense secretary should do the country "a service" and resign from his post.

Rumsfeld faces swelling tide of criticism
By Kathy Kiely, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Hailed as a conquering hero after last year's quick victory over Saddam Hussein's army, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is fast becoming the focus of intense criticism over his handling of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

5. My point exactly
We often times here on DU criticize the Dem leadership for not doing more to out the Mis-administration. Now here we are at a valuable crossroads just months away from the elections and we are doing nothing about it.

We should rise up and demand the resignation of this bum through and email champaign NOW.....

4. I just saw a blurb on CNN that said the numbers of democrats asking
for Rummy to resign is growing.

I guess McCain and Warner are pretty hot under the collar. I don't know if they are calling for his resignation but they are "highly critical" from what I gather.

8. i think that asking rumsfeld to step down...
is missing the issue, i think the only hope to begin to restore credibility within the global community is to begin impeachment proceedings against this president immediately

12. The petition is great....I signed it too..but we need more...
We should be emailing our lawmakers on capitol hill now. Rumsfeld is in 3 hearing today and letters, calls, and email is the most effective way to register our outrage and demand the Bush regime to stop the Bullshit.

Start now by outing Rumsfeld

15. IF WE DO NOT ASK RUMSFELD TO STEP DOWN
The Repukes will use it later against us. They will spin it against us to say the American public did not want him removed meaning they approave of the job he is doing.

Now can anyone here say the approave of the situation in Iraq.

The torture

The no WMDs

The lack of proper support for the troops.

The faulty intel

The snipers shooting women and children

16. the way i see it
is that to ask for rumsfeld resignation will be playing right into their hands..the ultimate scapegoat. don't you find it interesting that the tongue lashing rumsfeld got the other day was carefully leaked to the press? it is a classic set up...once rumsfeld is gone, they can make the case that they are demonstrably doing all that they can to to rectify the situation....to begin immediate impeachment proceedings against this president is what must be done, anything short of that looks like a thimble of water to put out a wildfire...once we begin, don't worry..the rest will drop like flys in their desperate attempt to distance themselves from this fiasco

18. Sample letter to copy - paste - and send
Feel free to send this to you lawmakers on Capitol Hill

Dear Sir

In light of all the failures of Mr Rumsfeld, I must ask that you recommend he step down at the earliest possible time. Every day that he remains in office sends a clear message to the rest of the world that Americans tolerate the deplorable acts that were committed in our name.

My sentiment is a reflection of accumulation of many failures on his part I believe. The lack of evidence of Weapons of Mass destruction, the insufficient troop deployment and supplying of our troops, the faulty estimates of time and cost of the conflict in Iraq, and the final straw the cover up of the Iraqi torture.

It is time Americans regain some of their self respect and demand Mr. Rumsfeld step down.

Sincerely

21. His opening statements today are full of lies
All the statements are being recorded and will be made public

I hope some one will post a link for them so we can point out all the lies and send it out to the media. This is the most disqusting attempt of a cover up I have ever seen.

Not to mention another example of Rumsfeld lieing under oath

22. Because it takes the pressure off of BUSH!
Edited on Fri May-07-04 11:34 AM by japanduh
I want BUSH OUT! By firing Rumsfeld, it kind of gives Bush a "Get out of Jail free card". He uses Rumsfeld as a sacrificial lamb and he gets off easy. People will think that "Oh they fired Rumsfeld, he must've been behind all of the bad stuff in Iraq" now everything will be hunky dory. Its a CLASSIC damage-control power-play thats been utilized by kings and dictators for thousands of years.

NO!

Everything will NOT be hunky dory. If we fire someone, we gotta look right to the top, and that means either Cheney or Bush. Don't let those two get off easy by dropping off an expendable sandbag or 2!

With Rumsfeld outed he goes into the elections as a wounded animal

I swear we will look at this in hind sight as the one true moment we have Bushco in check once and for all. If we miss this opportunity we might not have another
