Rumsfeld is lying right now about taking seriously reports made
That's why he's so nervous. The congresswoman had his ass to the fire. This article is dated April 2002 inre: John Walker Lindh.

http://archives.tcm.ie/breakingnews/2002/04/13/story46355.asp

...as part of a written court filing, Lindh’s lawyers last month released a picture of him in Afghanistan, blindfolded, strapped to a stretcher and naked. Defence officials have said that while that photo may have appeared shocking, it was taken out of context because he was naked as part of his preparation for medical treatment.

In the newly-revealed incident, Lindh has an obscene, derogatory word written across his blindfold, a senior defence official said.

The Pentagon has repeatedly limited the media in the kind of photos it can take of prisoners from the war in Afghanistan on the argument that photos subjecting the prisoners to humiliation violate Geneva Convention provisions on treatment of prisoners.

The photos troops took of themselves with their prisoner were found when the Pentagon did a computer search for documents and other materials ordered by the court hearing charges against Lindh, another official said.

Existence of the photos were first reported on CBS Evening News, a television programme.

Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld said he did not know if the photos were being held at the Pentagon and that he hadn’t seen them.

‘‘You know, there’s hundreds of detainees, and about every day somebody says something,’’ he said in response to reporter’s questions.

‘‘I guess if you ask me when I got up in the morning - and we’ve got people being killed in the Mideast and we’ve got a war going on in Afghanistan - if I am going to change my schedule and go chasing after rumours on things like that, it’s unlikely,’’ he said in impromptu comments in a Pentagon hallway.

1. Oh god, he is the most arrogant, pompous ASS ever!
I hate him so much. He demonstrates everything that I despise about this administration every time he opens his mouth.

He knew. He is such a liar. They probably ordered the pictures.

2. Rumsfeld's lies
He just said no knowledge of prison abuses until January 2004. ONE year ago, May of 2003 there were reports all over the place. HE IS LYING.

9. I recall seeing the photo of Lindh w/the military gesturing around him
as he lay, naked, on a flat board, bound and blind-folded. I don't recall what the epithet written on his blindfold was. Rumsfeld was made aware of this abuse because Lindh's attorney used it in court w/o success. Since then, Rummy feigned ignorance, did nothing, and as a consequence, the military received the green light to continue this abuse. Senator Clinton pointed this out today.

I did a search the other day and could only find Lindh's photo as described above, sans the military posturing. The DoD has the unscrubbed photo under lock and key, no doubt.

Rummy has to go. He's a pathological liar.

5. Believe me, I'm not defending Rummy and the boys, but
is it possible that he is also a delegator like Bush, and really didn't pay any attention to the reports?

I guess the reason I'm asking is because I've worked for people who simply delegated ALL the work to his subordinates. If something went wrong, he was very truthful in saying he didn't know anything about it.

I happened to think he is responsible because he is the Sec. of the DOD, but is it possible he isn't lying now.

8. The forms of abuse were made known to him in 2002 w/Lindh
Edited on Fri May-07-04 04:55 PM by lebkuchen
It's on record that the abuse was brought to his attention, and there were photographs to prove it.

Rummy said then that he couldn't be bothered with "rumors," and that he was essentially too busy to deal with them.

Today he's saying he had first heard of issues of abuse anywhere between 16 Jan 2004 and the 60 Minutes program (he can't narrow that down somewhat??). That's a lie.

He's also using the same excuse today that he did in 2002, that he was too busy, too overwhelmed with those 3,000 court martials taking place to know about every minute detail taking place in the DoD. That statement flies in the face of his comment about his insistance that the court martials currently working their way through the system prove how seriously the DoD takes these issues. You can't have it both ways.

He's lying. Plausible deniability doesn't work here because of the facts. What's cool is that he's under oath.
