My mom saw the MTP poll and said Bush will get re-elected.

They went through all the polls and showed the Bush/Kerry poll that has Bush at 46% and Kerry at 43%. She said in somewhat of an "I told you so" tone, yup, he is going to win." She has said things like this before. So I said "it depends on the poll." She said, "No it does not." The thing is I got annoyed because I have been doing what I could to fight against Bush and have been getting entrenched in Democratic party politics. It came through. After having cited that other polls had Kerry ahead of Bush, I said "Don't call it before it happens." I was annoyed and it came through. The dialogue went downhill from there. SHe does not like Bush but I really got tired of the naysaying and it showed. I know, not good on Mother's day. The thing is, she sticks to the belief that people stick with the incumbent because they know what he is like and they don't know what the challenger is like.

As for the poll, someone told me that the poll was before the torture scandal broke. Or that it was early enough that the ramifications had not been felt. On another note, wasn't Kerry within the margin of error on that poll?

1. still way too early. but thenews from now to nov. won't be good for bush
i don't know how bad it will be, but other than osama's head on a platter, it's hard to see any "good news" for shrub anytime soon.

though that won't keep the media from painting it as such....

11. It is very sad!
Both of my folks are voting for the moron! They don't like Bush(have turned against him in the past couple of years), but they don't like Kerry either. My father's deluded philosophy is that Dems are bad and Rethugs make better leaders. :eyes:

14. Ask your father how our bicameral political process is supposed to work...
then remind him that the presidency, House, Senate, and Supreme Court are now ALL Republican owned. Whether he likes Democrats are not, there has got to be some balancing of power.

And how is there supposed to be any moderation now? It's called checks and balances. Right now, there are none. That is not a democracy.

3. Never heard of an MTP poll, likely an internet poll? Any one who
has access to multiple IP addresses or PC's can vote as often as they want. The last poll I saw was,

American Research Group Poll. May 3-6, 2004. N=770 registered voters nationwide. MoE ± 3.5.
Bush 44% Kerry 47%

5. Your mom might be right or wrong, but if she is sure then she is stupid.

November is a long way away. Either Bush or Kerry can blow it or win it between now and then.

I mean no offense to your mom or you.

6. Let's see. I believe that Clinton was in 3rd at this time when he ran.
Mom is right. People will stick with the incumbent UNLESS they think he's doing a bad job. Also, there are really 50 elections that have to be one and not one national one. If that were the case, Al Gore would now be president. Too bad your mom didn't see the right track/wrong track numbers. 33% say we're going in the right direction and 50% the wrong track.

I'm sorry about Mother's Day. Next year will be better.

9. She did see those polls.
She saw the right track/wrong track numbers and then that last poll and then started that "Bush will get re-elected diatribe." For the tenth time at least. I had finally had it. The thing is, as I have gotten older she and I have developed more friction between us.

12. Poppy Bush was doing much less of a bad job

when he was booted from office.

Gore won the popular vote by a half-million. He lost the electoral college in a highly questionable way (ok, it was stolen from him).

Here's the question to ask moms and dads and everyone who feels that the Chimp will win:

Among the people who voted for Gore last time, how many of them will vote Chimp this time?

Answer: A disappearingly small number that is statistically zero.

Next question:

Among the people who voted for Nader last time, how many of them will vote for someone other than the Democratic nominee?

Answer: Many fewer than last time, especially in swing states.

Next question:

Among those who voted for Chimp last time because they liked his plans for spending the budget surplus slightly better than they liked Al Gore's plans for a "lock box," how many will vote for the Democrat this time?

Answer: A large number, especially those in swing states.

If the election were held today, with fair access to voting booths and fair vote tallying, Kerry would win in a landslide.

Edited for logical consistency.

7. My hubby says the same thing
He really thinks that Americans will buy into the "Don't change horses in the middle of a stream" crap.

I like what one Duer posted: "Don't change horses in the middle of the Apocalypse."

Need to make that a bumper sticker.

13. The trouble with the Polls is....
some people on the fence don't make up their mind until the instant they vote and that can make a big difference in a close election.

What about Nader? Is he pulling some stunt where he will jump out at the last minute or could he be a spoiler.... again?

With all that has been already revealed, my 86 year old mother says, "Bush is a good and honest man." Some Repubs wouldn't change their mind if the whole administration was videotaped prancing around nude on the White House roof shooting machine guns in the air and broadcast on every TV network.

15. It's true that some people will vote for Shrub no matter what.
Maybe 35% of the total voting population. He can't win with just his base, and that's all he has right now.

Don't let the hardcore right-wing get you down. It's the people in the middle who determine the outcome - the independents and moderates without strong party loyalty.

And the huge majority of those folks are hopping mad at W right now. They aren't interested in hearing about how often he prays. They have eyes and ears and they see that he has done a terrible job in every aspect of the job.
