Red Cross Report Describes Systematic U.S. Abuse in Iraq

By Alexander G. Higgins Associated Press Writer
Published: May 10, 2004
GENEVA (AP) - A Red Cross report disclosed Monday said coalition intelligence officers estimated that 70-90 percent of Iraqi detainees were arrested by mistake and said Red Cross observers witnessed U.S. officers mistreating Abu Ghraib prisoners by keeping them naked in total darkness in empty cells.

The report by the International Committee of the Red Cross supports its allegations that abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers was broad and "not individual acts" - contrary to President Bush's contention that the mistreatment "was the wrongdoing of a few."

"ICRC delegates directly witnessed and documented a variety of methods used to secure the cooperation of the persons deprived of their liberty with their interrogators," according to the confidential report.

The delegates saw in October how detainees at Abu Ghraib were kept "completely naked in totally empty concrete cells and in total darkness," the report said.

"Upon witnessing such cases, the ICRC interrupted its visits and requested an explanation from the authorities," the report said. "The military intelligence officer in charge of the interrogation explained that this practice was 'part of the process.'" <snip>

2. I am too ashamed of this country to even speak.
We can blame Bush for everything up to right now. But from here on out, we know... If these crimes continue after today, then we are guilty, too, for letting it happen. Once you know the truth, you cannot remain inactive or you are an accomplis.

4. Absolutley correct!!
Just like in Germany, where the allied forces who liberated the concentration camps forced the German population of neighboring towns to walk through to view what the Nazi's had done. The US public needs to see the pictures--not just of the Iraqi prisoners or the US coffins but all of the horrific war pictures that have been surpressed in the USSA--the dead children, maimed women and elderly, dead bodies laying for days in the streets of Fallujah because every time the Iraqis tried to bury them they were shot at by US troops. And the media continues to protect the Bush cabal...

3. I find it very interesting that the ICRC leaked this report.
I have always been under the impression that they act under strict confidentiality rules.

Very interesting.

6. I believe Rummie agreed to provide the "ok",...
,...during the hearing on this matter. Either that or perhaps the legislative branch gave ICRC the "ok".

No matter how this report was obtained,...it further indicates how corrupt and wicked is our present leadership: a leadership that has, in calculated ways, broken the Geneva Convention laws and concealed their actions.

A thousand times worse than the Watergate workings!!!

7. I saw one of the RC leaders on BBC America
He said they would not discuss any specific cases. He talked about having reported these concerns already, and about systemic abuse.

8. They only "leaked the report" after the information became public
So they only furnish "details".

5. Red Cross Report Describes Abuse in Iraq (check this out)

Yahoo link

The report by the International Committee of the Red Cross supports its allegations that abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers was broad and "not individual acts" — contrary to President Bush (news - web sites)'s contention that the mistreatment "was the wrongdoing of a few."

snip

"Arresting authorities entered houses usually after dark, breaking down doors, waking up residents roughly, yelling orders, forcing family members into one room under military guard while searching the rest of the house and further breaking doors, cabinets and other property," the report said.

This administration should be through now. Bush knew and lied about it. What will it take for people to finally wake up to the ineptitude of this administration?
