HELP! Randi Rhodes is right. How do we stop CNN?
I mean, FoxNews has appealled to the basest and lowest forms of human intellect in providing their "news" coverage....all cable news channels are WAY behind the big networks in audience, but CNN still lost market share relative to Foxnews and feels the only way to claw back is to slant their news in a similar direction (The evil trinity would be Judy Likesitruff, Aaron Brownnoser, and Wolf Hitler).

On top of that, they are being paid off through ridiculous ads by huge corporations selling....nothing. Boeing? Kerr McGee? They are not throwing their $$$ away...they just expect their news to be bought and they want a specific type of product.

Get it? Just boycotting them doesn't work. The advertisers don't want you the viewer to buy a 767 or an offshore drilling rig. We have to somehow appeal to the parent company of CNN or find some issue legally with them. What can we do?

I don't want worse and worser and worstest which is what we have with CNN, MSNBC, and FOXnews.

Any ideas?

I used to like CNN. Kinda like I used to like MTV back in the mid 80s

1. The parent company of CNN is AOL-Time Warner
Colin Powell was on their board of directors for years. So was Charlton Heston.

Does that answer your question?

5. I don't watch. But they had Army PsyOps in the newsroom??
My alarm isn't because of what I'm WATCHING...it is with the fact that many people still are watching and being manipulated by sh!tty reporting that is bought and paid for. Here's another troubling bit you guys probably covered before regarding PsyOps.

7. The internet will be our news source
It is only a matter of time before television news is but a memory. News services will be centered around websites.

9. in a way that would be cool....but I doubt it.
people have been conditioned to passively sit there and accept everything through the pale glow of the TV. It might happen if we achieve more morphing of streaming TV on computers and work it through large screen tvs.

But one thing that's helpful is a trend toward more reading. I just think they would try too hard to do their usual BS and direct people to "NEWS" that would really be nothing but a commercial or propaganda.

And then they could do even better job of tracking their trends and serving up everything just the way you like it rather than the real news.

4. We must pull the plug on all TV/cable ... NOW
and get our news from other media outlets - internet, papers, mags, radio.

6. I'm thinking more strategically than me as Audience of One
I mean something more proactive. I'm a control freak. I see this crap being shovelled so high...and I want to pull the plug. What can we do collectively to turn their message? Anything? tell others not to watch?

I want to reimpose the fairness doctrine.

10. bias everywhere
whether it is tv/cable the internet, newspapers, mags or radio there will always be a bias, be it liberal or conservative.

news is reported by human beings (or written up by them) and as such is bound by human weaknesses and biases.

11. Did anyone just see that Bruce Morton piece?
It was about how people who SHOULD "like" Kerry do not -- veterans, 60 year olds, white males -- people like him. They of course interviewed only anti-Kerry people, not a single pro-Kerry. DESPICABLE!! Why don't they do a story on why people hate Bush so fucking much? Nooooooooo. That wouldn't fit into their little agenda.

I hate CNN. All we can do is spread the word about Fox, CNN, etc. Make people view them with skepticism. Plant the seed whenever you can. Work it into casual conversation about how slanted they are to the right.

13. good point. if we can show them for what they are..SPINELESS
and keep all viewers either on Broadcast news or the over the top Foxnews...we can force CNN back to some accountability.

I am so depressed about the state of media because this is how people are INFORMED and form opinion.

It's a side reason about why they don't want to educate 'rglr murricans'. If they give great educations to the well-off who understand the system is rigged in their favor, they can undereducate the working classes and manipulate them with social issue arguments.

12. Bill Moyers is the only real journalist on Network TV right now
I think Lou Dobbs just happens to disagree with the current right-wing tilt of this administration. I still don't trust him.

14. THERE IS NO REAL NEWS OUTLET ON CABLE
When CNN jumped the shark (Ted left), they became "infotainment filler" between commercials by and for their parent company's products..

Their "shows" are just that...shows..

BBC's 1/2 hour is news....Lehrer does news...that's about it.. Even Moyers is "theme" oriented, and cannot be considered "news"..

World report on the weekend is news..

Because they sit at a desk, people mistakenly think that CNNMSRNCFOXCNBC "prompter-readers" are doing news...they are not.. They are filling time between commercials..

15. Ask your cable company for BBC news and Democracy Now...
We get them both and I just couldn't take the "big Five" (Disney-ABC, Fox-Murdoch, CNN, CNN Headline-AOL Time-Warner, Viacom-CBS and General Electric-MSNBC, NBC, CNBC) cable channels, so I really just quit watching well over a year ago, right before the start of the illegal Iraq invasion...but lately I have been peeking, and it's worse, dreadful!!!

16. She already gave you the correct answer...
*word of mouth*

it really works.

sure you can turn off our tv (i do that). sure you can get news from alternate sources (foreign tv news is great, internet, foreign papers, books).

but what good does doing the right thing mean if you are the only one that knows it's the right thing?

you gotta preach. you gotta tell people about the conservative media. you gotta have coherent arguments showing that you've watched usa tv and other news sources and through critical comparison can prove usa tv is just propaganda. you can't keep 'the good news' to yourself.

that is how you fight. and it works. believe me. a pebble in a pond leaves ripples that reach the edge.

17. Word of mouth is GREAT! One mind at a time. But, in addition...

WHILE you are educating people, becoming your own information-broker, your own little "independent news agency," the following is also recommended:

CONTACT PEOPLE! CALL YOUR REPS - and start planting seeds about reinstituting the Fairness Doctrine! Start planting seeds that gets them started thinking about it. CALL CNN, MSNBC, ETC AND COMPLAIN! If Lou Dobbs does something you approve of, LET HIM KNOW.

Also, Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" on MSNBC is VERY good - call HIM and let him know. He has very thoughtfully provided us all the proof we need - in his interview with Joseph Wilson a few weeks ago. It was the day after Wilson appeared on "Meet the Press," and had told Tim Russert about his encounters with media bias. He told Russert he's had journalists actually tell him that they are AFRAID to write (suggests these were print people, specifically, but I bet it goes to broadcast folks also) ANYTHING even slightly critical of the bushies because if they did, they'd get a nasty phone call from the White House, or THEIR EDITOR OR PRODUCER, above them, would get an angry or even threatening phone call from the White House. Wilson quoted one of them as telling him "I've got two kids in private school and a mortgage to pay." THEN, on the heels of that, Wilson comes on with Keith Olbermann. Olbermann has him on two segments in the same show. As he's speaking to him the first time (Wilson was on a monitor - from someplace else and Olbermann was in studio) he holds up these pieces of paper for the camera. Olbermann waves them in the air, slightly, to draw further attention to them, and states - these are THREE pages of emails (emphasis, his) that we (referring to his show - producers and the like, and possibly also he himself) got just earlier today from the White House. Somebody there found out you were coming on this show today and emailed us with questions we should ask. That's as close to verbatim as I can recall at the moment. THEN, Olbermann added - oh yeah, and they also added "please call me!" He then went on with the interview, specifically about this type of White House pressure, having clearly noted what Wilson had told Tim Russert the day before, and also indicating that they had resisted the urge to call the White House back.

By the way - for calling, communicating, complaining purposes, by all means take advantage of this:

PLEASE NOTE MY SIG LINE – TO CALL YOUR REPS, TOLL FREE!!!

OR, TRY (877) – 762 – 8762. It’ll get you there, too! (Thank you, DUer redqueen!)

IF THEY THINK WE DON’T CARE, THEY WON’T, EITHER!

And by the way, part two: If your choice is to turn off your TV or not watch whoever or whatever anymore, it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you communicate THIS to them, as well. They need to hear specifically and pointedly that their stuff is turning much-needed viewers away, and that those viewers are turning away from their sponsors as well. They'll never know if they don't hear about it - like that proverbial tree that falls in the forest but nobody sees it so nobody knows it ever fell. Olbermann, in fact, was quoted once, somewhere here on DU, as saying if he got more encouraging emails from people, or MSNBC in general got more favorable feedback about him, then upper management would let him do whatever he wanted. It's REALLY true. I've said it before here, myself: MY OWN job on the radio was saved during a time of great instability, management changes, and head-rollings at one station where I worked - simply because I got a favorable mention, by name, in one ratings survey. Pink slips were everywhere, but nobody touched me for about a year.
