Charles Horman was a free-lance writer and filmmaker who was murdered shortly after the September 11, 1973 Chilean coup. The movie
Missing was based on the story of what happened and his family's search for truth.

As you may recall, the movie is about the murder, and search for information regarding, American freelance writer Charles Horman. Horman went missing in Santiago Chile shortly after the U.S. sponsored coupe de tat led by Pinochet that began on, of all dates, September 11th, 1973.
As the U.S. government helped to obscure the ultimate fate of the missing American, it came to light that police in Chile arrested Horman, interrogated, murdered, then Dumped on the side of a road his body

Recently, documents were released through the FOIA regarding the Horman murder. Although still censored, they do indicate that the CIA at the bare minimum had pointed the finger at Horman to the Pinochet thugs.

Document 2: U.S. Embassy Santiago, "
Reports on GOC Involvement in Death of Charles Horman, Asks Embassy for Asylum and Aid," April 28, 1987
Nearly fourteen years after the coup, an informant seeking political asylum at the U.S. Embassy in Chile offers an account of Horman's death. Horman was picked up in a routine sweep, the informant suggests, and was found in possession of "extremist" materials. He was then taken the National Stadium where he was interrogated and later executed on the orders of Pedro Espinoza. Embassy officials note that his story "corresponds with what we know about the case and the attempt to cover up their involvement," suggesting that the informant is probably telling the truth.

My transcription of part of the above document:
According to _________ Horman was detained on September 16 by a unit stationed at the military school during a routine action against a home reputed to house extremists. Materials were found at the house which were considered "extremist" in content. Horman was interrogated at the military school and then transferred to the national stadium for further questioning. He was ordered shot and killed the evening September 19. According to _______ the authorities at the stadium did no know that norman was an American since his paperwork arrived after his death, and his poor knowledge of Spanish made it difficult for him to understand and answer questions. They only knew he was a foriegner and an "extremist". The body was taken from the stadium and left at a location to create the idea that he had been killed in a firefight with the military. However, in the confused days following the coup, and after it was known that he was an American, the military sought to hide the fact that he was dead. _______ confirmed that Horman was required to change clothes shortly before he was executed. According to _____ Pedro Espinoza was the one at the stadium who approved the killing of Horman. He noted that several hundred were shot at the stadium, but that many more were killed in Valparaiso, where the bodies were dumped at sea.
Maybe I need to get me a :tinfoilhat:.
