Bush Girls Gone Mild?
Bush girls gone mild?: Twenty-two-years old and soon to graduate from college, presidential twins Jenna and Barbara Bush - previously best known for rampant nightclubbing and underage drinking - are blossoming into admirable young ladies, claims People magazine.

Jenna, who'll collect her bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, will be moving to Manhattan to do volunteer work with schoolchildren.

"She's looking for something where she can give back," says an Austin friend.

Yale almost-grad Barbara, meanwhile, will intern with a pediatric AIDS program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

People reports that the Bush sisters - who heretofore shunned the glare of publicity and politics - also will be featured in a joint interview in Vogue, and then pitch in on their dad's reelection campaign.

8. That's totally unfounded and uncalled for
Here is an instance in which two people from a privileged family seem to be rejecting the path of narcissism and instead looking for ways to give back to others, and they're STILL criticized for it?

:eyes:

Here's a thought -- the Bush twins are NOT their father. Like many kids, they may look at the life that their father has lived -- a life of undeserved privilege outside of a lucky ticket in the birth canal lottery -- and rejected that life in favor of taking their own path. Rather than take cheap shots, why not acknowledge them for it?

11. Agreed, acknowledge them right up to the point where they...
..."pitch in on their dad's reelection campaign."

If they're going to do that...with all due respect to your opinions and your post...I cannot accept the assertion that they are rejecting anything "in favor of taking their own path."

In terms of career, yes. Consider them acknowledged and applauded with no cheap shots from me.

I also acknowledge ANYONE who "pitches in" on Bush's re-election campaign...but it's a "different" kind of acknowledgement.

21. I disagree it's not unfounded nor uncalled for
Edited on Thu May-20-04 10:34 AM by Warren Stuart
If the twins are going to inject themselves into the campaign, like their mother claims they are, then they are fair game.

This is just a stunt to give the Republicans a talking point, or haven't you heard about the "Good News" initiative? (See Glenn Reynolds) The spin point du jour is that our news is not being balanced by good news.

And right on cue Laura is showing up on Leno, and the twins are pretending to be Jimmy Carter. Until I see it, and see them make a serious investment in time and energy in these projects they claim to advocate for, then I'll believe it.

Until then I don't trust a word that comes out of the White House. Remember everything is done for the sake of politics, everything. Why would this be any different?

2. They must be such a disappointment to their parents
"Jenna...will be moving to Manhattan to do volunteer work with schoolchildren.

"She's looking for something where she can give back," says an Austin friend.

Yale almost-grad Barbara, meanwhile, will intern with a pediatric AIDS program..."

6. Good for them -- it's more than their father ever did
Personally, I think that it's great that the Bush twins are looking to use their comfortable lives to help other people. I've increasingly gotten the feeling over the past few years that they never really have bought into a lot of the "noble privilege" attitude conveyed by their father's family -- especially from their grandmother. I think that has something to do with the way that they both really tried to avoid the spotlight over the past few years.

Certainly, there were instances early on of misbehavior, but after all they were only late teenagers -- I know I did more than my fair share of stupid shit in college at that age. Maybe, just maybe, they have figured out that despite their comfortable lives to this point, that the true purpose of their lives lies not in amassing more personal wealth but instead in using their comfort as an opportunity to give to others.

12. What fortuitous timing for bush, just a few months before the election
Aw, he's not such a bad guy after all, is he, look at how his daughters turned out.

I think the daughters are okay, I've always thought they were okay, but I smell a skunk. Laura suddenly being front and center more than ever, the daughters coming forth with their new image. Nothing personifies the perfect American male like a good Christian man and his perfect little family, eh?

Rove is polishing the image of bush the family man.

Call me a cynic, but I'm sure the Bush "girls" are doing exactly what's being required of them to stay in the testamentary instrument (i.e., will). Working with children and juvenile AIDS patients plus a Vogue piece just before Daddy's re-election bid seems just a bit too convenient, does it not? I'd guess the Bush girls' tenures at these oh-so-compassionate gigs will end somewhere around the third week of November.

14. Oh come on, folks
Do you REALLY think that the Bush twins are ready for social service and sympathy? It's another Rove spin, I'm sure. It's an election year for crying out loud! The swinging, swilling twins becoming saints suddenly after years of partying, carousing and all the fun stuff in life? Forget it! Chances are, * took them into a room and told them if they didn't behave like good little liberal social workers at least until November, they'd be spending the next 4 years, perhaps more, locked in a mental institution for being alcoholics, or some other such horrendous punishment--perhaps even cutting off the money supply to them.

What you're gonna see is both of the jobs they obtain will be through high money donors to the GWB campaign, and while it'll look all righteous on the outside, chances are they'll be winging to high social spots on trips more often than actually sitting down with the downtrodden.

Let's face it--drugs and alcohol keep them going. The spin is pissing me off--when a good kid like Chelsea Clinton is compared to a dog from a leading right-wingnut like Limbaugh, there is NO way I'm willing to take pity or sympathy on the two bad girls from the Bush household. Face it: Noelle and the twins are the same side of a coin--their reputations are perhaps a little more protected because they're the daughters of the president, not the daughter of a governor.

A sham perpetrated by the controllers to portray Shrub as a great family man. What a coincidence (!) that five months before the election, both daughters become regular Mother Teresa's. I like to think this is sincere, but I'll wait and see if they are still doing charity work after the election.

20. "and then pitch in on their dad's reelection campaign"...
...I cannot cut and paste that one enough.

I don't even care about the motives and / or agendas behind their career choices. It may be sincere, it may be another pantsload of Rove 'n' Hughes spin, or some combination of the two. As Pappy Bush once said, "read my lips"...I do not care about where the Bush girls go to work. Good luck and Godspeed to them both...seriously.

I DO care about the damn "and then pitch in on their dad's reelection campaign."

We cannot and should not turn these girls into "dashbboard saints." There's a big middle ground between taking cheap shots at them...and it is everyone's God-given, "freedom-lovin', Born In The U.S.A." right to take them or not as they see fit...and putting them up on a high, moral pedestal while they are...

"pitching in on their dad's reelection campaign."

And yes, Chelsea got more unfair treatment from the media for being "a good kid," as you stated, than the Bush girls did for being a couple of drunks. I wish more people would scream about THAT one.
