US Imprisons Innocent Wives and Daughters of Iraqi Insurgents
The Americans are holding these Iraqi women to put pressure on their fathers or husbands.

From the Christian Science Monitor:

The Fourth Geneva Convention, which guarantees the rights of civilians under military occupation, forbids the use of "moral coercion" - such as holding relatives - to get information. It also prohibits punishing anyone for an offense he or she has not personally committed.
......
Last November, coalition forces detained the wife and daughter of Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, one of Saddam Hussein's top deputies. After Hussein's capture last year, Mr. Douri became the most wanted Iraqi official. His wife and daughter remain in US custody.

I wish there were more of an outcry from the American people against the military our-tax-dollars-pays-for, doing this.

As far as I know, no one has asked Bush or White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan why we're imprisoning women we know are innocent.

You can send a letter to the editor of a newspaper, or send a link about this to friends, or phone your Senator/Congressperson.

If you want to call Congress:
Dial 1-800-839-5276 (Capitol Switchboard) and ask to be transferred to the office of one of your Senators or your Congressperson.

Then you could say, for example, "I'd like to speak to someone about prisoners in Iraq."

Then leave a message for the Senator/Congressperson.

and abused in order to get his father to talk.

6. We did declare war on Iraq so Geneva Convention applies
So how are they going to explain this one away.

I'm not expert but it seems simple to me they have gone out side the law on this one.

There wasn't an official War Declaration, but every witness who testified to the Senate committee said the Geneva Convention applies to the Iraq War.

10. So here are clear violations of the Geneva Convention
That they should be held accountable for.

and just what do the Freeper minions think of all this is the most shameful of all. That rant and rave for war (send some one else's child into harms way) then break down and violate all provisions meant to protect them

13. White House counsel Alberto Gonzales' learned opinion on Geneva
Speaking of the "war on terror," Gonzales stated, "In my judgment, this new paradigm renders obsolete Geneva's strict limitations on questioning of enemy prisoners and renders quaint some of its provisions."

Unfuckingbelievable.

14. The Geneva Convention requires all prisoners to be treated humanely.
Edited on Fri May-21-04 07:13 PM by Eric J in MN
The Geneva Convention requires all prisoners to be treated humanely.

POWs have more rights, but every prisoner must be treated humanely under the Geneva Convention, no matter what the person is suspected of.

The notion of Gonzalez and Bush that there are exceptions to humane treatment under the Geneva Convention isn't consistent with the law.

15. I think they believe they are far above and beyond the law
That's just one of the things that makes this misadministration so scary.

And I am not sure they are wrong--I can see no entity or mechanism that could actually compel the U.S. to answer for these war crimes, at least not at the present time.

I'm hoping that someone other than the seven MPs will be charged.

A contractor or someone in Military Intelligence, who gave orders for torture, for example.

I don't have any hope that Bush or Rumsfeld or a general will be charged.

16. Well according to woman beater John Fund
who was just on CNN, these cases should be put into context. These women were really bad women you see. Not that that excuses it, but we have to put it into context. These were really bad women you see...

This is all the repubics have: circular arguments that say nothing.
