draft bill (S 89 and HR 163)

so it seems a draft bill is in the works. i hadnt actually heard any dates, but it looks like they want it implimented right after the 2004 election.

they have been superfunding the SSS.

And one more thing, we already have a draft... with all the soldiers who have been involuntarily extended. Oh and one more thing, as of May First they have been trying to get the Ready Reserve in, and a date of July 1st has been floated (Rhandhi Rhodes show, one caller said this... from a retired Colonel)

So the Draft is here, will just be extended to the kids who will be blind sided by this.

Oh and one more thing... even if Kerry is elected, the army is broken to the point, courtesy of BushCo, that we may have no choice.

2. I believe in community service.

I believe in giving back to this nation that has given me so much. However, this bill may be worded like that, but it won't end up like that. This bill will end up sucking in the poorer among us to become cannon fodder for Bush's war.

The college bound will probably get deferred until they have finished their education. Then there is graduate school, which might last until the war is over.

The kids of the influential will get the strings pulled to get the safer jobs and The kids who don't have an influential relative will end up in the war zones.

If your name is Bush, your public service requirements can be accomplished by working on someone's political campaign.

YOU can believe all you want in community service, but if this draft revs up in mid-2005 as planned, community service will not be on the menu in the Middle East.

I still think the connected kids will NOT be going to Iraq.

There will be ways for anyone named "Bush" to avoid Iraq.

By the time all the loopholes and work-arounds are added in, it will be just like the previous drafts. The middle class or poorer and the minority segments of society will be doing the majority of the hazardous duty.


We have "off-shored" so many good jobs, how about off-shoring this unpleasant task. I wonder what country would like to fight our battles for us.

8. We've been discussing this on DU for the last several months....

...the legislation was introduced to both houses of Congress in January 2003, and both bills are sitting in their respective Armed Services Committees. No deferments except for finishing high school, and both men and women ages 18-26 will be eligible for the draft lottery.

Additionally, the Selective Service System has been given a budget of $25 million to get their systems up and running by mid-2005. The head of the SSS has recently recommended that the age-range for potential selection by lottery to be increased to age 34.

Your point is valid (and scary), but I imagine most countries will be less than eager to return folks to the USA when they see how the USA has been acting recently.

10. We all know that Hollings and Rangel introduced these bills to make a

statement, not to restart the draft.

And whoever wrote this article was being totally disingenuous when they say, "The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately. "

They know that almost every bill introduced dies in committee, and that these ones, there for over a year are dead.

People here can say whatever they want, but I do not believe there will be a draft anytime in the near future, because Republicans like to win elections just as much as we do.

The only thing I can even conceive of that would ever necessitate the need for a return to conscription is if conflict erupts on the Korean peninsula.

Hollings and Rangel have nothing to do with quietly filling these draft board positions. This administration has been planning for a draft for sometime to make sure they have enough kids for their multiple-theatre wars.

such as terms on draft boards lasting 20 years, and the last push to fill draft boards being nearly 20 years ago.

Like I said before, Republicans like winning elections too, and if they win in November, and reinstitute the draft, it could set them back as much as 15-20 years.
