Poll question: Should There Be An Independent Kurdistan?
What is the general consensus here at the DU on this subject?

Do the Kurds --- who were left out of the secret "Sykes-Picot Agreement" between the French and British that led to the creation of the current Iraqi "nation" after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire --- deserve their own independent statehood with self-determination?

3. Described as the "world's largest ethnic group w/out a homeland" -
That seems like pretty good reason to have an independent Kurdistan.

4. Yes. "Iraq" is a colonial construct.
Let the Kurds have a state. Let the Sunni have one, too. Let the Shi'a join Iran. As I've said before, any time you see straight lines on a desert country's map, you can bet Europeans drew it, without thought for tribal/ethnic boundaries.

I used to live in Nigeria. Same thing there.

6. yes they should
but I don't see how it's going to happen. Turkey won't allow a Kurdish state on their border. Especially a Kurdish state sitting on the oil in northern Iraq - Turkey will have to see that as a threat - a nation opposed to their own and able to fund a revolutionary movement amongst the Kurds in Turkey.

Since Turkey is a member of NATO, they're our ally -

The situation is a real mess.

9. I say , yes.
I have known some Kurds as well as various people, who immigrated from the Middle East and Middle Asia, when I lived in Los Angeles County. do believe they need their own homeland. Israelis and Palestinians should agree with this, because this is what they too want for their own ethnic groups.
