A Memorial Day burn: Where is the casualty reporting?
Edited on Sun May-30-04 09:48 PM by WilliamPitt
I watch the news as sharply as any 50 people I know (minus the hard-core rock stars in LBN) and I have stopped seeing notices of the deaths of soldiers in Iraq. Yet I check here:

http://lunaville.org/warcasualties/Summary.aspx

...and the number keeps going up. It was 802 American soldiers killed when I last looked on Friday. It is 810 now.

What say you, America? I have 'Patton' on my TV as the AMC channel sings the praises of fallen men and women in other wars with a three day 'American Movie' marathon about war and glory. Where is the glory for the anonymous dead in Iraq? Where is the glory for those sent hom in 'transfer tubes'?

Blood is great for the movie channels, I guess. The real stuff is too sticky, even on Memorial Day.

Fuck you, George W. Bush.

Fuck you, Dick Cheney.

Fuck you, Don Rumsfeld.

Fuck you, Paul Wolfowitz.

Fuck you, Richard Perle.

Fuck you, Doug Feith.

Fuck you, William Luti

Fuck you, Ahmad Chalabi.

"Where is the horse and the rider?
Where is the horn that was blowing?
They have passed like rain on the mountains.
Like wind in the meadow.
The days have gone down in the west.
Behind the hills, into shadow.
How did it come to this?"

- Theoden King

1. I take it you didn't watch 60 Minutes tonight?

2. I didn't
and am so glad they did this. Still, eight soldiers died in the last 48 hours. I saw little about it beyond that one show.

Thanks for the link.

3. And we're not alone
Let's not forget the dead of our allies

UK: 59
Polish: 4
Danish: 1
Spanish: 11
Italian: 18
Ukrainian: 6
Bulgarian: 6
Thai: 2
Estonian: 1
Salvadoran: 1
Netherlands 1

Total: 110 additional dead

Bush lied to them, too.

And then there are the innocent Iraqis.....

4. I agree
the only mention of war dead this year is WWII. Its great they've completed the WWII memorial, but why is no one (except Andy Rooney) mentioning all the Americans who've died in Iraq this year.

Its bizarre, over 800 Americans dead and not a word about it on Memorial Day. Obviously the mainstream news media got a memo from Rove.

5. If I don't see something...
anything...about the Iraq War dead tomorrow on Memorial Day my head just may explode. I know that I haven't seen anything so far and I've been in an environment where all I've had is the mainstream media the last couple of days. Zip. Zilch. Nada. :-(

6. Every week
This Week with George Stephanopolis and the News Hour do tributes to those who died during the week. It was 14 in Iraq and 4 in Afghanistan this week.

7. Will, check out today's (Sunday's)
"Doonesbury", too. Seems like only the "funny papers" and "60 Minutes" saw fit to do this in any sort of mainstream way. Sad.
