EU Agrees to U.S. Flight Demand
I didn't see this posted but I thought it should be. I found it very interesting. I believe the ACLU is fighting the CAPPS II system (makes you wonder about CAPPS I). I can't believe anyone, anywhere thinks that a profiling system like this will make us safer.....

The European Union and the United States formally agreed on Friday to let American border officials access the personal information of every European heading to America on commercial airlines, despite objections from members of European Parliament, which voted three times against the deal.

The agreement (PDF) allows customs agents to access the airlines' databases up to 72 hours before a flight departs. The agents will use the databases to try to ferret out terrorists and "international" criminals.

....snip

The deal also has domestic ramifications as it frees the Transportation Security Administration to begin testing CAPPS II, the domestic airline passenger profiling system, using European passenger data.

2. There will be a brief drop in European tourism to the US...
...then it will be mostly forgotten, people will return to normal activities, and the system will remain in place. That's my prediction.

3. Believe it
"I can't believe anyone, anywhere thinks that a profiling system like this will make us safer....."

Oh, yes. Several here on DU defended Wes Clark's lobbying on behalf of Axciom to help build CAPPS II by saying it was necessary for flight safety.

4. I'm disappointed that there would be support
for CAPPS II on DU. It is hard to imagine how someone might believe this would improve flight safety.

I am so glad you posted Axicom's name. I have been trying to remember their name when I posted this. It was right on the tip of my tongue but I just couldn't come up with it. I am fairly familiar with their data and it has a good deal of issues.

Thank you!!
