A lot of us have right-wing relatives....
If one of them were to die, even at an advanced age, how would you feel if all your liberal friends were to start attacking him/her, rejoicing at his/her death?

Just a question that occcurred to me with all the Reagan threads...

I think this country is worse off for Reagan's presidency, but I'm not throwing parties to celebrate his passing. The man was NOT Hitler for pete's sake.

1. If one of my relatives were one of the most evil men of the 20th Century
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 11:52 AM by Feanorcurufinwe
I wouldn't be proud of the fact, but I wouldn't think to restrict the right of others to speak out about it.

Governor Ronald Reagan, 1969: "If there has to be a bloodbath, then let's get it over with."

2. I am sure the worst any of my right wing relatives ever did was vote for
republicans. When they die no one will be spending a week talking about them on TV. It is not quite the same thing.

7. How was Reagan less evil than Hitler?
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 11:58 AM by billbuckhead
That Ronnie merely killed hundreds of thousands instead of millions? I wonder if they'll let Raygun's creations Saddam and Osama attend the funeral?

15. His funding of right-wing death squads was disgusting...
..as was selling weapons to our Iranian enemies, but that is NOT the same as being directly responsible for the deaths of "hundreds of thousands". By that logic, Clinton would be directly responsible for the death of every Palestinian killed by Israel during his presidency, since we continued sending Israel billions in aid during that period...

6. If one of my right-wing relatives had blood on his hands
I would probably be siding with the people celebrating. As it is, I have many friends from Central America who lived through his death squads and still have trouble sleeping at night. So you know what? Fuck Reagan. His health problems were but a small fraction of what he deserved.

Hey, Pinochet is said to have some health problems as well as supposed to be mentally unbalanced according to his lawyers. Let's all be respectful of him when he goes too!

8. No we are not worse off!
Although I would say that a lot of what he did was not for the better, he did bring out the best of us, and helped this country get back on course.

To dance on someone's grave and image is one of the most disrespectful and delibrate forms of hate mongering there is. This kind of crap needs to end.

Love him or hate him, history will be very kind to this man.

12. Your version of the facts is nowhere close to reality.
"helped this country get back on course."

:wtf:

Ronald Reagan was an incompetent criminal and a bad actor who fooled a lot of good-hearted Americans.

18. Stop
Although his policies were not the best he at least did something, right, wrong or indifferent. We needed a leader- Carter was no leader! Just a poor soft hearted person, not a politician.

28. Right. That's why Admiral Rickover chose Carter for the nuclear navy...
...during the personal interview that he gave to each one of the officers trying to get into his program. Everybody knows that Rickover just hated leaders and independent thinkers.

By the way, Rickover would have taken Reagan, Poppy, and the FratBoy and fired their worthless lilly-livered butts out the torpedo tubes at a submerged depth of 500 feet just to see if they would make it to the surface.

Speaking of "stop", when are you going to stop posting your Freeper-madness on this board?

26. We are much worse off--and Reagan was a terrible human being
History will not be kind to Reagan, unless it is written entirely by wingnuts. The Reagan myths pushed by the right about his getting this country back on course, destroying the Soviet Union, and ending big government will be demolished by the facts.

I would say welcome to DU, but I think your stay will be a short one.

9. He was no Hitler, but he was no good and decent man either
I don't see anyone throwing a "party", but I see people speaking the truth about a man who can be linked to many bad and evil actions during his tenure as president.

I think it is human nature to be respectful of the newly dead, but in this instance, respect is hard to muster.

My condolences to his family. That's about all I can say.

25. did not mourn my mother in law
not exactly the same, but in a lot of ways, proportionately comparable. she was a mean, nasty person, who put a lot on energy in to keeping her kids at each other's throats. she also died of alzheimer's. we mourned the damage that she did. not a tear was shed for her. i am not a hypocrite, and i see no value in the kind of hypocrisy that we are up to our necks in today. ain't gonna shed a tear for my brother in law, either.
