Poll question: Can you fool all the people, all the time?
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 03:25 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
The poll question is: Is this quote from Abraham Lincoln true or false?

Abraham Lincoln: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

1. I must believe it
If not, all hope is gone and I may as well stick a gun in my mouth.

2. I voted true meaning Lincoln was right. Your title is the opposite
statement though.

5. While technically true, Lincoln's quote obfuscates the harsh reality
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 03:35 PM by Chris
Lincoln's quote, by only hitting the boundary conditions, says effectively that 'you can't fool everybody', to strike an optimistic chord.

The problem lies in the unspoken reality of what happens under the broad middle of the bell curve:

"You can fool most of the people, most of the time."

And that's where all kinds of damage is done, even in a democracy.

6. Most Excellent Point That...
In a democracy. you only have to fool most of the people most of the time.

No wonder they treat public education like shit, eh???

:hi:

9. That ignores the fact that once people realize they are being fooled
they rarely go back. So when you have a serial liar in public life, as time goes on, he has less and less credibility.

11. by the way, it's unlikely Lincoln ever said that.
There were no records of him saying that during his lifetime.

Decades after his death, someone claimed to have heard him say that.
