Priest tells bushwa Sr to actually put his money where his mouth is......
That is, be a Christian and get rid of his possessions!

Dang, why couldn't I be that fly on the wall just that once?! The look on *s face must have been priceless!

Bush Family Listens as a Minister Urges Wealthy Congregation to Ditch Possessions
by Scott Lindlaw

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - A clergyman implored his affluent congregation, including President Bush's family, to jettison their material possessions, gently mocking George H.W. Bush's struggles on the golf course to drive home his point.

The Very Rev. Martin Luther Agnew preached Sunday to a packed Episcopal church just down the road from the Bush family's seaside estate. Its oceanfront parking lot was filled with luxury cars made by Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo, testament to the wealth of the summer visitors at this southeast Maine resort.

"Gated communities," Agnew said, "tend to keep out God's people." But, he said, "Our material gifts do not have to be a wall."

"They can very well be a door. Jesus says, 'Sell your possessions and give alms,'" Agnew said. "I'm convinced that what we keep owns us, and what we give away sets us free."

1. Probably no one there
really much interested in being "set free". More like, "Can I have a receipt, this contribution is deductible isn't it?"

2. The fact that they were all a captive audience is great!
I bet it burned their asses not to be pandered to by the reverend. Good on him! This artice made my day - to imagine that lot of festering beast wads squirming in their seats and wearing frozen smiles plastered on their mugs.

There are many of us who are peeved that the clergy have been so spineless when it comes to *really* preaching the gospel. To hear of one who put it out like it is, kinda makes the sun come out. :)

Now, this priest set the tone....... the others need to follow up.

Maybe they're finding their calcium.........?

on edit..... rereading the article, it looks like both #41 and #43 were there, along with Babsie and Laurabot. No mention of the twins..... But, Jeb, etc.........
Oh, now I'm laughing again.......

5. Yop - the whole Bushwad was in attendance
Your post deserves a kick. :kick: The Bush clan never seems to get a comeuppance. I'll bet the Bushmama's girdle and it's beautiful mind even melted over this.

A captive audience indeed. LOL That would have been worth any amount to watch those faces or look into those hearts.

Man, good on that Minister!! Fantabulous :D and Amen

...with a chartreuse, acidy taste in their maws? It pleases me no end that as I was sleeping-in this morning, they were gettin' it but good.

10. Read this earlier in the WP, and it was a hoot!
Rev. M.L. Agnew got his licks in, and the whole Corleone familia had to sit there -- they can't very well duck out of church en masse with the press there!

I'd like to think that Rev. Agnew's remarks were deliberately pointed, but who knows? Regardless, the fact that Poppy kept a poker face meant that the joke wasn't going down very well. Pity.

Thanks, Kanary! :toast:

11. You're right.... a captive audience!
Now, if only the clergy had the courage to keep up the truth-telling pressure.

You're very welcome..... glad it gave you a :)

12. <sound of chirping crickets in pews>
I'm sure the sermon was really well-received by the richie-rich.:eyes:

Not that I disagree with it. It's just that the few wealthy people I know who AREN'T overly attached to their STUFF happen to be dems!

13. Didn't Jesus say, "It's easier for a rich man to go through an eye of a
needle than to enter Heaven"?

Maybe that saying should have been put on Chrismas cards sent to Bush.

14. Yup... it's time for the clergy to actually be preaching the gospel....
This one started on it, and I hope many, many others follow.

Still gives me a chuckle to think about it....
