Is it GOOD that "I Have A Dream" is Dr. King's most famous speech?
We should indeed celebrate the 40th anniversary of this masterpiece of oration; only the beautitudes of Christ has touched my soul with the same degree of resonance.

But is this how we should remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.--as the integration idealist of 1963? Or would Americans do better to recall the King of 1967-68?

The King that gave the world "Beyond Vietnam", exposing America as an imperialist power. The King who fought Johnson's madness with every fiber of his being, regardless of the vehemence with which his more moderate colleagues wielded in attempting to discredit his radicalism. The King who denounced capitalism as an institution of evil, imprisoning its citizens through war and economic exploitation. And the King who would join the company of Socrates, Christ, and RFK(to name but a few) as slain enemies of the State.

We could imagine would Martin Luther King would have to say about these neoconservative monsters posing as Christians. And yet, and this is directed towards a portion of DUers who are party loyalists, wouldn't the King of '68 have denounced Carter and Clinton for the parts they played in waging war on the destitute while filling the coffers of the upper class?

How do you remember Dr. King?
